Summary
The 2001 classicHalo: Combat Evolvedcan now be played in VR thanks to a community-made mod. However, there is one major catch that could make thisHalo: Combat Evolvedmod difficult for many players to access.
Halohas had an increasingly impressive mod scene in recent years. The launch of theMaster Chief Collectionon PC a few years ago was just the start, with 343 Industries also releasing official mod tools so that talented creators can create their ownHaloadventures. This has resulted in tons of epic mods over the years. Just recently, a clever group of modders even managed to recreateHalo 2’s E3 2003 demo in theMaster Chief Collection, allowing players to finally get their hands on the iconic gameplay slice over two decades after it was first teased by Bungie.
Gamers can download theHalo: Combat EvolvedVR mod onGitHub, while footage of it in action was posted to YouTube by user LunchAndVR. It looks like an absolute blast, offering a brand-new way to experience a game now well over two decades old. According to the mod’s GitHub page, it has essential features such as functional scopes for appropriateHaloweapons, a two-handed aiming mode, a detached floating UI, and a floating crosshair, among many other things. There are some known issues, such as the camera behaving strangely when getting in and out of vehicles, but as a new release, hopefully these problems will be ironed out over time.
Halo: Combat Evolved Looks Awesome in VR
There is a catch, however. ThisHalo: Combat Evolvedmod requires a version of the original 2003 PC copy, which isn’t readily available nowadays. Most who playanyHalogameplay it throughHalo: Master Chief Collection, although that isn’t possible here. According to the GitHub page, cracked versions of the game won’t work either, but the creator does point out that product keys aren’t single-use, so purchasing a second-hand copy would still be a viable way to get hold of the game.
TheHalofranchise is in for an interesting few years. 343 Industries' rebrand to Halo Studios marks the start of a new era for the series, especially considering it, like many other developers, is making the move to Unreal Engine 5 going forward. There are also rumors of aHalo: Combat Evolvedremake, with some suggesting it could come as early as 2026. However, this is just a rumor at the moment, so it should be taken as a pinch of salt.
