The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomwas the talk of the town when it came out on Nintendo Switch in May 2023, and after all the glowing reviews it received, it quickly became a frontrunner for Game of the Year. The latest mainline installment in theZeldafranchise is not only one of the most acclaimed Nintendo games ever made, it’s also one of the highest-rated games of all time. On OpenCritic, it sits at a 96/100 Top Critic Average and has a 97% Critic Approval rating. Meanwhile, on Metacritic, the game has a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.8/10. The onlyZeldagames that have higher ratings thanTears of the Kingdomare 2017’sBreath of the Wildand 1998’sOcarina of Time.
There is no shortage ofZeldagames on Switch, butThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomis technically the first (and perhaps only) mainline entry in the series to be completely exclusive to the console. After all, its predecessor came out on Wii U the same day it was released on Switch. SinceToTKwas designed from the ground up with Nintendo’s current-gen console in mind, it’s able to take full advantage of the system’s hardware. The vast open world and player freedom the game offers really push the Switch to its limits.ToTK’s open-ended approach to theZeldaformula may not be for everyone, but it’s arguably one of the best Switch games ever, and thanks to an upcoming sale, November 2024 is the perfect time to pick it up.
