Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s Recent Update Makes It Worth a Revisit
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Was Initially a Divisive Entry in the Series
Not only wasAssassin’s Creed Syndicatethe game that followed the notoriously divisiveAssassin’s Creed Unity, thereby requiring a decent amount of trust from incoming fans who felt burned byUnity, but it also arrived at a time whenAssassin’s Creedfatiguebegan to set in. At the time ofAssassin’s Creed Syndicate’s launch, the series had been releasing installments annually for nearly a decade, andSyndicate’s hesitancy to shake up the series' formula didn’t help with that. That being said,Assassin’s Creed Syndicatedid introduce dual protagonists for the first time in the series, but even that feature was divisive.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s dual protagonists,Jacob and Evie Frye, were a bit of a mixed bag. Jacob largely clashed with the more serious tone of the franchise’s past Assassins with his often brash and immature dialogue. Evie, on the other hand, might have been better than Jacob in that way, but her narrative was less prominent than Jacob’s. Then there’s the game’s antagonist, Crawford Starrick, who was underdeveloped in comparison to past series antagonists, like Haytham Kenway or Charles Lee.
All of that said,Assassin’s Creed Syndicatewouldn’t be properly categorized as a divisive entry if it didn’t have a few things going for it. While its dual protagonists offered a fresh approach to gameplay, its 19th-century London setting was incredibly detailed for its time, with arecreation of the Industrial Revolution erathat stacked up nicely against the time periods the series explored prior. Additionally, whereas Jacob might have stuck out like a sore thumb, Evie was charming and enjoyable to play as.
For these reasons,Assassin’s Creed Syndicatehas gained a level of appreciation over time that it didn’t have at launch, much like its predecessor,Assassin’s Creed Unity.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s 60 FPS Update Makes It Worth Another Try
Regardless of how divisiveAssassin’s Creed Syndicatehas proven to be, now might be the best time for fans of the series to return to it thanks to a recent performance patch. While the PC version has had these features for some time now, the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Proversions ofAssassin’s Creed Syndicateare now playable in 60 FPS. Additionally, players can reach up to a 4K resolution on the Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro, while the Xbox Series S is limited to 1080p. Given how captivatingAssassin’s Creed Syndicate’s world already is, this performance patch will bring out that quality even more so on modern consoles.
