Now thatThe Penguinis officially out and the first season is over, it’s time for the next installment of the new official DCU.Creature Commandosis the next show to hit the airwaves when it launches on Amazon Prime in December. From there, things are really rolling, and James Gunn’s baby really starts to take shape.Peacemakerwill also be one of the first projects to be part of this new DCU when it launches next summer. But before that, Superman: Legacy will hit theDCUfirst.
The most significant part of these cinematic universes is that everything is tied together. Gunn has not only said that characters in live-action and animated series and movies will all be the same and tied together, but the stories will all follow the same path. Knowing that just how all of the first big seriesin the DCU tie togetheris a very good question. It can be hard to figure out just how the stories go and what comes first. With everything being connected, it’s important to know how things line up, especially since all of these projects are launching months apart.
What’s the Chronology of the New DCU?
Perhaps the bigger question than where the new series fit into the DCU is where a show like The Penguin fits in. What makes this particularly interesting is that Gunn himself has said thatCreature Commandosare the first projectin the new DCU. However, the man in charge of all of this hasn’t specifically saidThe BatmanandThe Penguinaren’t part of this new reboot. In essence it appears that Oz Cobb and the rest are in a weird kind of limbo as they also aren’t part of the DCEU. The good news is that for the start of this new DC Cinematic Universe, that’s about the end of the confusion.
Gunn has made things pretty easy to follow when it comes to thechronology of the DCUat the start. That’s a decent move considering it could backfire pretty spectacularly if fans were having to do some mental gymnastics to see how everything fits together right at the beginning of what is expected to be a very long timeline.
It appears that at the start, the order of the shows’ release dates is also where they will line up in the DCU timeline. That means thatCreature Commandosis not only the firstto air in this rebooted cinematic universe but also the events of the Amazon Prime series, which will be the first of the three projects that are all hitting TVs and theaters over the next year. Then, whenSuperman: Legacyhits theaters next summer, that will officially continue whatever story needs to be picked up. And then finally,PeacemakerSeason 2 will hit HBO Maxin August and will pick up at least part of those stories and carry on. Of course, there is a weird degree of difficulty in that James Gunn said that all ofPeacemakerSeason 1 is canonexcept for the appearance of the Justice League at the very end of the season. That technically means that the first season comes beforeCreature Commandosin this timeline, though the animated series won’t carry forward any of the story in the streaming series.
The Connective Tissue For Peacemaker Season 2
Generally, when talking about a cinematic universe, there is something that ties stories together from one show or movie to the next. WhileCreature Commandos,Superman: LegacyandPeacemakerSeason 2 probably aren’t going to have a ton in common, it turns out that one thing will tie all three shows together. It turns out thatFrank Grillo will have a rolein all three projects.
Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr. in all three titles and will play a prominent role inCreature Commandos. It seems that he will be one of the stars of the animated series and then his parts will be a bit more of a background character inSuperman: Legacy. It sounds like he might even be in the movie specifically to be little more than the connective tissue.
It’s possible his role inPeacemakerSeason 2 could be a little bigger since he’ll be playing the father of the character thatChris killed in theSuicide Squadmovie. It’s of course possible he could even be on a bit of a vendetta and be looking for blood from the team. What is clear at this point is that the show will feature the same character as in the first two and could help the audience keep track of this new DCU timeline.
