WhileCaves of Qudoffers an immense sandbox for players to explore, it also has a number of quests that can help them gear up and prepare for the challenges ahead. For those starting in Joppa, there’s a quest called What’s Eating The Watervine — it’s pretty simple on paper, but as with all things in Qud, it’s not as easy as it appears.
Muchlike other RPGs, questing inCaves of Qudoften rewards players with XP and plenty of useful resources, and early on, you’re going to need plenty of both to survive. Here’s a quick guide for this early game quest to help you progress as quickly and smoothly as possible.
What’s Eating The Watervine Walkthrough
This quest is given to players by Mehmet, one of the villagers in Joppa who inform the player of some trouble regarding their Watervines. Whatever’s eating Joppa’s plants have started to cause trouble for the village, and so players are given the opportunity to solve the problem for a small reward. For this quest, you must do the following objectives:
How to Get to Redrock
Redrock is located two parasangs north of Joppa. A parasang is a unit of measurement equal to one tile in the World Map (accessed via the “-” button on the NumPad. From Joppa, you’ll need to travel about four screens northward.A prompt will tell you that you’ve reached Redrock once you’ve progressed far enough.
Moving via the world map works likea form of fast traveling. However, if you move this way, you have a chance of getting lost, further complicating navigation.
Finding the Critter
The critter you’re looking for is called a Girshling, which is represented by a purple, insect-like sprite on the main screen. To find one, you need tofind an entrance to an underground cave system. After reaching Redrock, look around the nearby zones for a set of descending stairs. Stand over it, then press Space to enter it. From here,keep descending until another quest prompt appears.
The prompt will say that you found one of the critters eating Joppa’s Watervine. Explore the cave until you see a Girshling. Kill it, then bring back its corpse by standing over it and pressing Space.
What’s Eating The Watervine Rewards
Once you return to Joppa, speak with Mehmet, then Elder Irudad in the village’s main hut. The latter will tell you some lore about Girshlings before rewarding you with the following items:
Weird Artifacts are often useful items that your character can’t or does not recognize. For them to be useful, you need toidentify them like items inDiablo 2. Go to your inventory, select the Weird Artifact, press Space, then select Examine. If your character isn’t knowledgeable enough, find a Tinker in a village and have them identify stuff for you.
