Summary
Freevee is being shut down by Amazon in the lead up to the third and final season ofBosch: Legacyin March 2025.There had been rumors for a few months now that Freevee would be phased out, now that Prime Video also features ad-supported content. It has raised a lot of questions about where exactly fans will be able to watchBosch: Legacyseason 3,as well as a lot of other Freevee originals.
Freevee was originally formed in 2019 under the name of IMDB Tv, but it was rebranded to its current name in 2022, and it became the home ofBosch: Legacy. However, speculation has been rife about the future of Freevee, afterBosch: Legacywas canceled in September 2024.So why exactly is Freevee shutting down, and what does it mean forBosch: Legacyseason 3?
Why Is Amazon Freevee Shutting Down?
The official line from Amazon (courtesy ofDeadline) as to why Freevee is being shutdown is as follows:
We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, Fast Channels and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering. To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding.
Amazon’s actions have been rather baffling over the last few months, especially after their statement announcing the end ofBosch: Legacydespite it being one of the most watched shows around.A ‘simpler viewing experience’ as Amazon calls it, could basically mean: There are adverts on Prime Video now anyway, so why bother with Freevee? This is a complete U-turn to what Amazon said about Freevee back in February 2024:
An important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers with thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.

Bosch: Legacywill still be available to non-prime members despite the imminent shut-down of Freevee, but it will now fall under the umbrella of Prime Video.Confused yet? For Prime members, nothing actually changes, as they had access toBosch: Legacyand other Freevee originals anyway. Amazon’s official statement provided toVarietysaid:
There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video.
So basically, the content that is labeled as Freevee will fall under the title of ‘Watch For Free’ for non Prime members.Amazon claims that nobody is being laid off, as Freevee’s team had already moved over to Prime Video beforehand. Freevee essentially acted as a way to get Amazon into the advertising world, but it seems they no longer need it since they launched their own barrage of ads on their main platform back in January 2024.
There Has To Be Some Link Between Bosch: Legacy’s Cancelation And Amazon Freevee Being Shut Down
There is something extremely odd going on at Amazon. This has been apparent ever sincethe end ofBosch: Legacywas announced in September 2024.After the recent announcement that Amazon Freevee would be phased out over the coming weeks, it’s hard for fans not to make a connection between the demise of the ad-supported platform andBosch: Legacycoming to an abrupt end.So what is really going on? What Amazon says and what they do are two completely different things. They promised more stories inMichael Connelly’s Bosch-verse, to soften the blow of the cancelation of the main show, and then they axed theJerry Edgar spin-offweeks later. They said Freevee wasn’t being shut down a few months ago, and now they’ve shut it down. There is a pattern to their actions. If they saytheBallardspin-offis going to run for five seasons, it could get canceled after one.
