Summary
Mortal Kombat 1’s Ghostface may have had their face revealed, but that might not be the end of the mystery surrounding them. Out of all of the guest fighters inMortal Kombat 1, Ghostface stands out in a few notable ways. Unlike most horror movie guest characters, Ghostface has no supernatural traits, although their similarly masked allies in the game do. At the same time, they also brought something of a mystery surrounding which Ghostface was under the mask. However, even though the game does provide players with an answer, it may not be telling the whole story.
Therecent resurgence ofScreamin gaminghas done plenty to keep Ghostface on the level of other slasher icons like Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers. One of the most prominent aspects of Ghostface in the films is the fact that there’s always someone new under the mask, and in most cases, there’s more than one of them. In each of the films, a large part of the intrigue comes from discovering which of the new characters will be the latest to take up the mask. While most games can’t replicate that element, they do manage to capture Ghostface’s chaotic, murderous nature well.
Mortal Kombat 1’s Ghostface Could Be Either of the Original Killers Depending on the Circumstance
Billy Loomis is Shown as Mortal Kombat 1’s Ghostface
With the arrival ofGhostface inMortal Kombat 1, the question of who was under the mask was asked quickly. Once he was released, the answer seemed to come almost as quickly. While Ghostface uses a voice changer while speaking, they do lose their mask upon being hit by a Fatality or Brutality. When they do, the player can see that Billy is behindMortal Kombat 1’s Ghostface. However, one possible piece of banter in a mirror match between two Ghostfaces has Billy and Stu, the other killer from the original, recognize each other. This raises the possibility of Stu also beingMK1’s Ghostface.
Ghostface’s accomplices inMortal Kombat 1seem to also be hiding their true identities, likely being Kobra and Kira.
Stu Macher Could Also Be Ghostface in Mortal Kombat 1
Motal Kombat 1’s multiverseplayed a notable role in its plot and backstory. With that in mind, even if Billy and Stu aren’t in the sameMortal Kombattimeline, they could have easily been sent to alternate timelines. In that case, the mirror match between them would be one of many examples in the game of people from other timelines meeting. That also means that, theoretically, the Ghostface in any match could be either Billy or Stu, The only way to know for sure is if they get hit with a Fatality, which reveals that it’s Billy.
Billy Being Exposed by Fatalities Feels Like a Scream Call-Back
Billy being the only Ghostface vulnerable tofatalities inMortal Kombat 1also makes sense lore-wise. In theScreamseries, Billy is explicitly dead after the first movie. However, Stu is actually implied to have possibly survived, and at one point was supposed to return. That would explain why only Billy can fall victim to the Fatalities. Billy canonically dies, so he can die again inMortal Kombat. However, Stu’s canon fate is not entirely confirmed, so his being able to avoid death makes sense in an unusual way. Going byScreamcanon, Billy can die again, while Stu’s fate can remain unproven.
As a guest character, Ghostface’s entire existence is non-canon. However, Stu’s possible presence is aninteresting detail ofMortal Kombat 1’s Ghostfaceregardless. Even though his existence is only hinted at in one optional line, the possibility of him being there fits surprisingly well. Not to mention, his being immune to Fatalities would almost be like a fun shout-out to his unconfirmed death in the first film. Billy might be the only Ghostface who the player sees inMortal Kombat 1, but Stu could very well be under the mask too.
