Summary
The Batmanspinoff rumors have been circulating for years. A new one involving the Dark Knight’s arch-enemy recently resurfaced, and DC Studios boss James Gunn quickly debunked it.
The Batmandebuted in 2022 and launched a new shared cinematic universe that director Matt Reeves has named the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” The first spinoff wasThe PenguinTV series, withThe Batmanco-star Colin Farrell reprising his role. The series was a success with ratings and critics, sparking conversation about which other Batman villains could get a spinoff show. A rumor claimed Barry Keoghan’s Joker, who made a brief appearance inThe Batman, was set to get a spinoff TV series set betweenThe Batman Part 2and3.
On Threads,Gunnresponded toThe Batmanspinoff rumor by assuring fans there was “no truth” to it. Gunn clarified that a Joker TV series had not been discussed at the time he wrote the Threads post. He also urged fans not to attack Multiverse Nation, as they were merely one of many outlets reporting the rumor, which originated elsewhere.
One fan asked Gunn if would be interested in a Condiment King TV series. Considering the character is a joke villain created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini forBatman: The Animated Series, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume the fan was kidding or Gunn wouldn’t take this idea seriously. However, Gunn said he would support a Condiment King series by Reeves and that the “ball is in Matt’s court.”
Reeves' may or may not beinterested in using Condiment King, but Batman actor Robert Pattinson is. DuringThe Batmanpress tour, Pattinson expressed his fondness for Condiment King. Reeves was amused by Pattinson’s admiration for Condiment King but didn’t confirm if he was open to using the character.
Some fans may hope for a Condiment King series over a Joker show. While Joker is undoubtedly Batman’s greatest enemy, fans are growing weary of the Clown Prince of Crime. The character has been used in nearly every time the Batman film series has been rebooted. While the Joker performances by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and Keoghan have been spread out over nearly 30 years, the character has also appeared in just about every animatedBatmanproject or video game. That’s not to mention theJokerstandalone movies starring Joaquin Phoenix, which earned the ire of most moviegoers with thedivisive sequelJoker: Folie à Deux. In simplest terms, many fans are tired of the Joker.
