Summary

Star Warsfans eager for upcoming seriesStar Wars: Skeleton Crewgot some good news this week. The surprise follows what is becoming a somewhat common trend for the release of new Disney+ shows.

Skeleton Crew, announced in May 2022, has been described over and over as being a ‘Goonies in space’ type of project. Given the fact that it centers around curious kids getting lost in the galaxy after a mysterious discovery, it’s an easy conclusion to reach. Fans seem to have taken a particular liking to the adorable blue alien ‘Neel’, played by newcomer Robert Timothy Smith. Others have speculated thatAcademy Award-nominated actor Jude Law’s currently unnamed character may have more nefarious motivations,a theory the actor seems to have given some credence to.

This week Lucasfilm made an exciting announcementvia the officialStar WarsInstagram: the release date was pushed up a day, with the two-episode premiere moving from Dec 3 to Dec 2. Disney+ seems fond of surprise releases like this, having previouslydone the same with Ahsoka. But you likely won’t find any fans complaining about the habit! Quite the contrary, in fact, given the response to the news that they’ll be getting the series a day earlier than planned. It’s nice to see a group of fans so excited about the cast and willing to defend them from trolls, considering how young most of them are.

In addition to the new premiere date, fans were also giventhe names of each episode’s director(s). The list includes:actor-director Bryce Dallas Howard(who has directed some very memorable episodes of otherStar Warstelevision, includingThe Mandalorian), ‘The Daniels’ (AKA the minds behind 2023 Best Picture winnerEverything, Everywhere, All At Once), and Jon Watts (who helmed Tom Holland’s firstSpider-Mantrilogy). And the other directors are no less impressive. Co-creators Watts and Christopher Ford certainly assembled a very talented crew to bring this project to life.

Despite giving little hints eagle-eyed fans have noticed from the various trailers and teasers released over the course of the last few months, Lucasfilm is certainly keeping as much as they can under wraps. Not much can be surmised about what will happen in each episode yet, since we don’t have the titles. However, theories could potentially be made on the basis of the directors' previous works. For instance, Howard’s episodes ofThe Mandaloriantended to feature slightly more grounded stories (both literally and figuratively) in which the main characters have to grapple with a different way of life and decide which path to follow.Watts’sSpider-Manfilmsare about putting responsibility over desire and struggling with your identity. ‘The Daniels’ won an Oscar for their movie about acceptance and fighting with kindness. Does any of this give audiences hints towards what the episodes they directed will be like? Only time will tell us that, as well as whether or not Law is really a Sith…

The first two episodes ofStar Wars: Skeleton Crewwill be available to stream on Disney+ on December 2nd, 2024 at 6PM PST.
