Summary
A newStar Warsmovie has suffered a setback that fans are used to by now. However, details on theStar Warsmovie impacted by Disney’s decision remain unknown.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerwas released nearly half a decade ago in 2019 and as of this writing, it was the last feature film in the franchise to debut in theaters. Lucasfilm has been developing multipleStar Warsmovies in the following years, but most if not all have been delayed, scrapped, or their status remains unknown. Now, anotherStar Warsmovie faces an uncertain future, and fans think they know which one it is.
Disney has pulled a newStar Warsmovie from its Jul 23, 2025, release date. The untitledStar Warsmoviehas not received a new date on Disney’s calendar, and its slot was given toIce Age 6. PerDeadline, it “wasn’t certain” that theStar Warsmovie in question was one involving Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker. Of course, many fans believe the Rey movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is the likely candidate. ThatStar Warsmovie recently suffered a setbackwhen writer Steven Knight exited the project. However, Disney never confirmed the December 2016Star Warsmovie was Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey film, so this is purely speculative.
OtherStar Warsmovies in various stages of development couldhave been the mysterious December 2026 film. James Mangold will write and direct aStar Warsmovie about the Force’s origins and Taika Waititi is working on a new entry in the franchise. AStar Warsmovie by Shawn Levy is also in the works, and Donald Glover’sLandoTV series is being worked as a feature film. Patty Jenkins’Rogue Squadronmovie is also still in developmentafter seemingly being canceled. Still, fans believe Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey movie was pulled from the December 2026 date because it was arguably theStar Warsfeature film that was furthest along before Knight dropped out.
Another reason fans believe Obaid-Chinoy’s movie was pulled from Disney’s calendar is because of Lucasfilm’splans for Ridley’s Rey in theStar Warsfranchise. Lucasfilm is reportedly developing multiple movies intended to star Ridley as Rey, whom the company is said to consider its most valuable character. It is hoped that Ridley’s Rey will be in the newStar Warstrilogy written by Simon Kinberg, which may conflict with Obaid-Chinoy’s film. There may be a battle between potentialStar Warsdirectors over who can use Rey (which insiders reportedly deny), and if true, perhaps that’s why the untitledStar Warsmovie lost its December 2026 slot.
Again, this is all purely speculative. However,Star Warsfans are used to seeing projects postponed by now. It’s almost become a joke to start guessing when a newly announcedStar Warsproject will be canceled. That said, this untitledStar Warshasn’t necessarily been canceled. Still, few will be surprised if that’s what happens. Some even think the newReyStar Warsmovie should be canceledalready.
TheStar Warsfranchise is available on Disney Plus.
