Squid Gamebecame an instant hit when it premiered on Netflix on July 21, 2025. The South Korean survival thriller horror series dominated the streaming platform for weeks and even became the most-watched series at the time, with 1.65 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days. It has also received multiple awards from the Emmys, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and more. It won six Primetime Emmys and its lead star, Lee Jung-Jae made history by being the first Asian actor to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Additionally,it scored an American adaptation. Due to its success, it wasn’t surprising that Netflix greenlightedSquid GameSeason 2 and Season 3. With the second season due in a few weeks, Dong-hyuk shared some details about what to expect in the next season. He teased thatSquid GameSeason 2 would be “more gruesome.”

The series creator is well aware that things are getting worse in the real world and the series will reflect this. “It’s not getting better out there — it’s getting worse […] Worse climate change, more wars, more people dying. Compare the world [in 2021] and now — our lives are not improving,” Dong-hyuk told Empire. He added that “what we’ve created on Season 2 is a deeper, more advanced story” and warned that the next season would be worse than the first one. “I even had some concerns because the story told in the second season is much crueler, scarier and more gruesome than the first,” Hang continued. “Honestly, I thought to myself… ‘Is this too much for people to handle?'”

The director previously shared thatGi-hun would join the tournament again for revenge. This was shown in the trailer, where he was in the same room with the other participants, wearing the same uniform printed with the number 456. “Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge?” the director told Deadline. He also teased that the Front Man would not make Gi-hun’s task easy. So, fans will likely witness a conflict between the two.

The first season ofSquid Gameended with a lot of cliffhangers. For instance, many were wondering if Detective Hwang (Wi Ha-jun) would survive after the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) shot him in the chest, which led him to fall off a cliff and onto the ocean. There were also concerns about how the Front Man ended up with the job and who the people behind the deadly game were. Many viewers also want to learn more about the recruiter (Gong Yoo) and what will happen next to Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) in his return to the deadly game. Fortunately, all four characters – Detective Hwang, the Front Man, the recruiter and Gi-hun –will return forSquid GameSeason 2. This means that fans will likely find answers to their questions about them in the next few weeks. However, for sure, some questions will be left unanswered becausethe series will return for Season 3, which will serve as the final season.
