Speaking of Shadow, next year will see the Ultimate Lifeform take to the streets of Gotham asBatman in a DC/Sonic the Hedgehogcrossover comic. This is just the latest in a series of collaborations betweenSonicand other properties, as Sega’s mascot has joined forces with Mega Man in the Archie-publishedSonic the Hedgehogcomics, appeared in games likeMinecraftandAngry Birds, and even battled his longtime rival Mario and other beloved Nintendo mascots in theSuper Smash Bros. series.
Now Sonic is addingTransformersto the ever-growing list of franchises he’s crossed over with, as confirmed in a series of exciting social media posts and reported bySonic Stadium. First, the officialTransformersInstagram account shared a brief teaser clip of aTransformerslogo spinning to become one of Sonic’s power-granting golden rings against a background reminiscent of the classicGreen Hill stage from the originalSonic the Hedgehog. This spawned speculation of a sort of toy or comic crossover, with some pointing out that characters like Dr. Eggman would lend themselves well to Hasbro’s line of shape-shifting action figures.
Sonic and Transformers Are Colliding in New Toyline
Sure enough, a promotional image of a pair ofSonic the Hedgehog-themedTransformersfigures would appear a short time later, featuring Sonic and his faithful sidekick Miles “Tails” Prower re-imagined as converting battle mechs. Sonic is armed with a golden ring shield and Item Capsule melee weapon, and can transform into his Speed Star racecar fromSonic & Sega All-Stars Racingand its sequels. Meanwhile, Tails wields a blaster and changes into his famous Tornado biplane, which has served as a mode of transport for the high-flying fox since his first appearance inSonic the Hedgehog 2.
That is all that is currently known about the upcoming crossover betweenSonic the HedgehogandTransformers, as Sega and Hasbro have yet to make an official announcement. There is no word on when these toys will appear in stores, or if there will be any other characters available aside from Sonic and Tails. TheSonic the Hedgehogfranchise hasplenty of memorable supporting charactersand associated vehicles (such as Shadow and his Dark Rider motorcycle or Eggman and his vast array of battle machines), so there are plenty of exciting possibilities for the Blue Blur and his new team-up withTransformers.
