Summary
Sega has suddenly announced that bothSonic Adventuretitles will be delisted from the Xbox and Steam platforms in Germany and Italy on December 7. BothSonic Adventureand its sequel are considered the quintessentialSonic the Hedgehoggames and, depending on the fan, possibly the best of the franchise’s 3D titles. While both were originally released on the Sega Dreamcast, they were eventually brought over to other platforms, starting with the Nintendo GameCube, and later the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC via Steam. It appears that the Steam and Xbox 360 versions of the games are going to be delisted in a couple of countries soon.
Sega has recently announced the delisting of various classic titles, stating that it is getting rid of some of its legacy games. This announcement would see nearly 70 games being removed from digital stores on the PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Steam platforms, including titles from the Sega Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast libraries. This move by Sega hasn’t yet been explained, but it appears theSonic Adventuregames are next, albeit only in Germany and Italy for the moment.
On the Sega Classic Support FAQ page forGermanyandItaly, fans noticed the addition of bothSonic Adventure DXandSonic Adventure 2to the list of upcoming delisted games on the Xbox and Steam platforms.BothSonic Adventuretitleswill be removed from sale on December 7, alongside the aforementioned classic titles. It should be noted that these twoSonictitles are not listed on any other language version of pages, which may suggest that only certain European markets may be impacted, or the pages could be updated at a later date.
This isn’t the first time that Sega has started delisting classic games, as the 2011 original version ofSonic Generationswas delisted for purchase from the Xbox and Steam platforms ahead ofSonic X Shadow Generations' release. That said, theSonic the HedgehogLegacy Bundleincludes the originalSonic Generations, along with eight otherSonictitles on Steam, includingSonic Adventure DX,Sonic Adventure 2,Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, andSonic 3D Blast, which were among the titles that will soon be delisted.
While an official reason for the games' delisting hasn’t been provided yet, the most commonly speculated answer is thatSega might be planning to resell the older gamesas part of a larger package in a similar move to the aforementionedSonic the Hedgehoglegacy bundle. Nintendo’s recent announcement about expanding upon its Expansion Pack tier, which includes a number of Sega Genesis titles, might also be a reason why these older games got delisted. Fans will just need to wait for more information about these delistedSonic Adventureand classic Sega games.
