Summary
TheSilent Hill 2remake was snubbed for Game of the Year and Best Game Direction at The Game Awards 2024. The Game Awards just announced its nominees for the 2024 show, withSilent Hill 2picking up nominations in multiple categories.
Silent Hill 2is nominated for five awardsat The Game Awards 2024, securing nominations for Best Narrative, Best Score and Music, Best Audio Design, Best Performance (for Luke Roberts as James Sunderland), and Best Action/Adventure Game. I think that the game stands a fairly good shot at coming away with the award for Best Audio Design, and it could potentially pick up wins in the other categories as well. But while five nominations at The Game Awards is an incredible accomplishment, theSilent Hill 2remake was overlooked for two other categories.
Silent Hill 2should have been nominated for Game of the Year and Best Game Direction on top of the other categories that it was nominated for.Silent Hill 2was one of the highest-rated new video game releases of the year, well-received by fans and critics alike. This is even more impressive since many were ready to write the game off as soon as they sawSilent Hill 2’s combat-heavy trailer. Others dismissed the game when it was announced that Bloober Team was developing it, but the studio completely defied all expectations, delivering one of the best horror games in years.
Silent Hill 2 Deserved Game of the Year and Best Game Direction Nominations
The lack ofSilent Hill 2for Game of the Year and Best Game Direction would not sting as much ifElden RingDLC wasn’t occupying a spot in both categories. Many have criticized the choice toletElden Ring’sShadow of the ErdtreeDLC be eligible for Game of the Year, and rightfully so. There should be a separate category for DLC, or the DLC should have gotten the nod in the Ongoing Game category. Because nowElden RingDLC is taking up nominations that could go toward brand-new games released in 2024, whether that beSilent Hill 2or something else.

Now, some may argue thatSilent Hill 2should be ineligible because it’s a remake. While I would not be happy about remasters being nominated for The Game Awards' more prestigious awards, I think that remakes should be eligible. After all,Resident Evil 4was nominated for Game of the Year last year, and in many cases, video game remakes are so different that they are truly unique experiences compared to the originals. I thinktheSilent Hill 2remake is different enoughto be considered its own thing.
What Bloober Team accomplishedwithSilent Hill 2is incredible, especially when many fans expected them to fail. Creative director Mateusz Lenart and his team successfully completed the near-impossible task of delivering a remake that not only broughtSilent Hill 2to modern gaming standards, but also didn’t erase what people loved about the original. This makes the lack of a nod for Best Game Direction even more baffling than the Game of the Year snub. On the bright side,Silent Hill 2was nominated in five other categories and stands a good shot at taking home some awards when The Game Awards airs live on December 12.
