Summary

As far ashorrorsequels go,Scream 7is interesting since, in some ways, it’s going back to basics. I’m thrilled thatNeve Campbell is reprising her Sidney Prescott part and familiarScreamscribe Kevin Williamson is directing. Now that fans know thatIsabel May is playing Sidney’s daughter, it will be interesting to see how Sidney’s family is integrated into the creepy and funny slasher tale.

I like watching theScreammovies over and over again, but after reflecting onScream 6,I have one problem with the latest entry in the franchise.HopefullyScream 7won’t make the same mistake.

Scream 7 Needs To Right This Wrong From Scream 6

Bythe end ofScream 6, the main characters are ready to attempt to heal and move on from being targeted by Ghostface. But I think it’s a problem that every main character survives. Although fans never want to say goodbye to their favorite characters,it’s not logical for every character to make it to the end of a horror movie (and a slasher story, in particular). As much as I love Mindy (Jasmin Savoy-Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding), it didn’t make sense for them to both survive Ghostface’s attacks.I thinkScream6was too afraid to kill off its likable characters.

In contrast,Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) dies inScream 2,which is heartbreaking and upsetting. I loved Randy’s kind nature and close friendship with Sidney. But, although Kevin Williamson “regretted” killing Randy and wished he could have seen him grown up, Williamson knew this was an important plot point. The writer/director toldThe Hollywood Reporter:

Samara Weaving in Scream 6

“We had to kill a legacy. We had to kill someone that was involved withScreamone, and that was done halfway through so that we could up the stakes. I also wanted to upset the audience and make them mad at the killer.”

Chad’s survival was particularly confusingsince his injuries are so bloody and appear to be serious. It seemed like theScreamwriters wanted toleave the door open for Mindy and Chad to return toScream 7along withthe other Core Four members. But since Gooding and Savoy Brown’s returns haven’t been confirmed, and it’s unclear if they will come back for the seventh movie, it would have been more logical if Chad had succumbed to his injuries. Then, if Mindy returned, her storyline could focus on how she is grieving her brother’s death. This would also give her a motive to want to fight Ghostface.

WhileGale came close to dying inScream 6, I’m glad she didn’t because she is a legacy character. But at least one major character needs to die inScream 7.I don’t think Gale or Sidney would be the right call… but what about a new character who fans haven’t met yet? That would ensure that the horror sequel is scary and gory, but also ensure that Sidney and Gale could come back for another movie.

I wasn’t a huge fan whenDewey Riley (David Arquette) was killed inScream (2022). But, with some time, I’ve come to accept thatDewey’s death made sense from a storytelling POV. This proved thatGhostface can get anyone at any time and no one can feel safe and secure. I don’t agree with the decision to let everyone survive inScream 6and think that if a popular character died, that would have been powerful, moving, and terrifying. Sure, Ghostface felt scary since he had a shotgun, which was something I never thought I would see in this horror franchise. But in the end, Ghostface wasn’t as scary as before since so many characters managed to escape.

Which Characters Were Killed In Scream 6?

Although the kill count inScream 6could have been higher, there were some gory deaths. Of course, as always happens, the three Ghostface killers died:Ethan Landry (Jack Champion), Quinn Bailey (Liana Liberato), and Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney). The most heartbreaking death is Anika Kayoko (Devyn Nekoda). Like Tatum Riley’s (Rose McGowan) famous death by garage door inScream, it’s tough to watch Anika be killed since she’s an innocent and kind character.

Some othermemorableScream 6deaths include Greg, Jason Carvey (Tony Revoloroi), Dr. Christopher Stone (Henry Czerny), and Laura Crane (Samara Weaving). Laura dies inthe opening sequence ofScream 6, which is impressive and creativesince it’s so surprising. I love that no one was sure who the real Ghostface was. I hope that the opening ofScream 7is just as interesting and that by the end credits ofScream 7,audiences feel satisfied with the entire story, including who Ghostface targets.
