Summary
An actor from one of the worst DC movies had the perfect response to James Gunn’s tongue-in-cheek offer to reprise their role in the DC Universe (DCU).
Ryan Reynolds’Green Lanternis still one of the DC’s most infamous flops. A bomb with audiences and at the box office,Green Lanternis still the subject of jokes, including from Reynolds himself. So, it should come as no surprise that Reynolds wasn’t receptive when Gunn called him after the latter was appointed the creative mastermind of the rebooted DCU franchise.
During an interview on theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast to promote the animated series,Creature Commandos, Gunn and host Josh Horowitz brought up the fact that fanshaven’t seen a good live-action Green Lanternadaptation. Horowitz noted that he said this “with all due respect” and jokingly added that he didn’t want Reynolds to come after him. Gunn responded by revealing that Reynolds was one of the first people he talked to after being appointed the co-CEO of DC Studios, recounting how he asked Reynolds if he was coming back. Reynolds allegedly replied with a simple, “Get the f*** out of here,” but Gunn clarified that his offer to return as Green Lantern was not sincere.
Ryan doesn’t give a sht [Laughs]. One of the first people I talked to after getting the job was Ryan Reynolds. I’m like, ‘You coming back?’ He’s like, ‘Get the f** out of here.’ I’m joking! I wasn’t really telling him to come back.
Instead, the DCU’sGreen Lanternseries stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewartand Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Gunn has said theLanternsseries is “grounded” and set on Earth, which upset some fans who wanted to see the show explore the cosmic corner of the DC Universe. While speaking with Horowitz, Gunn defended the decision to make a “grounded” Green Lantern series, noting that most Green Lantern stories in the comics are also set on Earth.
While Gunn’s wasn’t serious when he offered Reynolds to chance to reprise his role as Green Lantern, some characters from past DC projects will move to the DCU. Characters and events from Gunn’sThe Suicide SquadandPeacemaker(which were set in the now-defunct DCEU) are canon in the DCU reboot. Xolo Maridueña will also reprise his role asBlue Beetle in a DCU animated series. This has angered fans who wanted to see Henry Cavill’s Superman and others return, but Gunn is seemingly choosing what he thinks worked in the DCEU and jettisoning the rest. Whether his plan works for theDCUremains to be seen.
