Summary
Based on the leaked codename of “Guinness” provided by a Sega insider, Sonic Team could be bringing back 2003’sSonic Heroes. TheSonic the Hedgehogfranchise has had a lot of hits in the 2020s between the success of Paramount’sSonic the Hedgehogfilms,Sonic Frontiers, and the recently releasedSonic X Shadow Generations. Speculation about the franchise’s future has also been prevalent, with the most hotly discussed rumors revolving around bringing backSonic Heroes.
Sonic Heroeswas first released in 2003 as a direct follow-up to 2001’sSonic Adventure 2and is also the franchise’s multiplatform debut on the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and original Xbox. It featured four different teams of heroes as they all fought against the forces of Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic. These teams also would solidify a lot of the modernSoniccast, such as bringing back Shadow the Hedgehog and Team Chaotix. A lot of fans have been clamoring fora remake or remaster ofSonic Heroes, and this recent rumor from insider RyanFromTheBronx only adds more fuel to the fire.
Rumors about aSonic Heroesrevivalfirst started circulating back in March, and recently resurfaced in October. RyanFromTheBronx, formerly known as Midori, recently posted on Twitter about the nextSonicgame’s codename, stating it to be “Guinness,” based on the famous beer. Fellow user WOKENJJT seemingly corroborated this claim, stating that past remasters or 2DSonicgames had used beer types as an internal codename, while new games didn’t.
A Sonic Heroes Remake or Remaster Could Be Coming in 2025
The codename of “Guinness” could also have a double meaning to it, as speculated by Twitter user Jonjoeeeeeeeeee, referencing howSonic Heroesholds the current Guinness World Record for “most playable characters in a platform video game.“Sonic Heroes' team-based structureallowed for three playable characters separated into Speed, Power, and Flight categories, along with the four groups of Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles), Team Dark (Shadow, Rouge, Omega), Team Rose (Amy, Big, and Cream), and Team Chaotix (Espio, Vector, Charmy). In total, that’s 12 playable characters in one platformer game.
The allegedSonic Heroesrevival supposedly has been in development since 2023 and is aiming for a Fall 2025 release date, though it isn’t clear if it’s a remaster in a similar vein tothe recently releasedSonic X Shadow Generationsor a new title taking inspiration from it. It should be noted that RyanFromTheBronx’s credibility has been questioned by a lot of gamers as well, especially after certain controversies about the user’s previous handle of Midori. As such, fans should take thisSonic Heroesrumor with a grain of salt until more official information is provided.
