Summary
Released in 2020, thePlayStation 5 sold over 65 million units globally, outselling the Xbox Series X/S.. However, the console is still lagging somewhat behind Sony’s previous PlayStation 4, which sold over 67 million copies in the same amount of time.
Now, some PlayStation 5 players are unhappy with a recent change in the console’s dashboard, which saw the previous News tab become the Official News tab. The problem is that the new tab is currently filled with content about popular live service games such asFortnite,Rocket League, andCall of Duty. According to CatGoblinMode’s social media post, for example, this change is “obnoxious” and it’s bad because gamers receive news from these titles despite opting not to follow them, which makes the News tab much less useful than before. In the post’s comments, most gamers agreed that advertising this way felt invasive and that they were often not interested in the games that appeared in the ads.
Some PlayStation 5 Owners Are Unhappy With Ads on The News Tab
This is not the first time that gamers have complained about PS5 changes after recent updates. Back in September, for example, gamers were already upset that theirPS5 was forcing ads into the user interface. However, at the time, the complaint was that Sony replaced the unique art that used to fill the background with these ads.
Issues with too many ads are not unique to the PS5. Last year, a similar change affected the Xbox community. SeveralXbox fans were frustrated with dashboard changes, which included making games and apps harder to find while shifting the focus to advertising, showing the store and services such as Xbox Game Pass more prominently.
Fortunately, not all changes in Sony’s console have been disliked by the player base. The PS5 30th Anniversary themes, for example, were generally loved by the community as nostalgic throwbacks to an earlier era of gaming. Recently, some fans even started apetition for Sony to keep the 30th Anniversary themes permanently, obtaining over 9,000 signatures by the time of this report. However, Sony has not addressed this petition yet.
