Max Mushrooms are a bit more difficult to get, at the time of writing, as they are only available through purchasing them within thePokemon GOin-game shop. Players can purchase 1 Max Mushroom for a total of 400 coins or3 Max Mushrooms for a total of 1000 coins. These items are a bit more expensive. However, sometimes they can also appear in event boxes or can also be given within event tickets, such as theGigantamax Lapras Max Battle Day ticketwhich was a total of $4.99.
These are the only ways that players can receive Max Mushrooms as of right now - there is no way to receive them for free. However, some players have been granted a free trial of Max Mushrooms for a total of 5 minutes. These 5 minutes should be enough to complete just one MAX battle that the player is trying to complete. Players will receive a notification on their device to try it and from there they can test it out to then see if they want to purchase it for themselves.
