Summary

An artist has shared their concept for a variant of Diglett and Dugtrio, putting an interesting twist on the iconic Gen 1PokemonGround-type pocket monster. Every Pokemon in the series has the potential to make fans think about unique takes, but the simplicity of Diglett’s features makes it a popular choice forPokemonfan creations.

The ability to change Diglett into something different seems to have impacted officialPokemondevelopment as well, judging by the convergent species that emerged inPokemon Scarlet and Violetwith Wiglett and Wugtrio. While they’re technically a different Pokemon line entirely from Diglett’s, they’re an interesting take on the well-established character design that went into Diglett.

Pokemonfan and artist StarfeyComet shared one of their recent pieces of fanart with the community, putting aporcine twist on the Pokemon. The variants have been renamed to Piglett and Hogtrio, with Piglett looking like a messy pig partially embedded in the mud beneath it, whereas Hogtrio strongly resembles boars, with tusks and a more fierce expression. Interestingly, these versions would also change the typing, with Piglett being a Normal-type and Hogtrio becoming Normal/Fighting-type.

Pokemon Pigs are a Hit, Albeit With Some Unintentional Design Elements

In general,Pokemonfans seem to be positive about the artist’s takes onDiglett and Dugtrio, with several expressing that they wish they were real or that they could add them to their own Pokemon team. However, it seems that several thought that the Pokemon were food-inspired, pointing to similarities between their designs and things like hot dogs, sausages, or even glazed ham. According to StarfeyComet, these similarities weren’t intentional, but they don’t mind viewers interpreting them that way.

However, StarfeyComet said that they did imagine that Piglett and Hogtrio would keep the mysterious element of always hiding the subterranean part of their bodies. Players have been able to take apeek at Diglett and Dugtrio’s lower bodiescourtesy of game glitches and digging into game files outside of the scope of normal gameplay. Chances are the addition of another Pokemon with hidden underground features would probably get fans clamoring to try and find out what’s going on with Piglett and Hogtrio, too.

In any case, this latest piece of work continues to demonstrate the imagination and creativity of thePokemoncommunity. Fans of the series could probably populate an entire Pokemon game with nothing but variations and reimaginings of a single Pokemon family tree, considering how many unique and clever designs have come out over the years.
