Summary
Sony has quietly brought back the wallet funds reward forPlayStation Starsusers, just one month after it was mysteriously removed from the loyalty program without any explanation. Before its removal,PlayStation Starsusers could exchange any accumulated points for store cash. And while the reward has now returned, it looks like users can only redeem $5 at once.
Since its inception in 2022, PlayStation’s popular loyalty program has experienced numerous controversies. After being taken offline unexpectedly earlier this year,PlayStation Stars finally made a comeback in Julyfollowing a whole month of downtime. Thankfully, the program continued to keep track of players' purchases and rewarded users with the relevant points. While fans were happy to see Stars make a return, the community was left miffed as Sony offered no explanation for the downtime and did not compensate users for its outage.
PlayStation Stars Wallet Funding Reward Mysteriously Returns
After being back online for just a few short months,PlayStation Stars removed one of its most popular rewardsin October, making it impossible for fans to exchange their accumulated points for cash wallet funds to spend on the PlayStation Store. As expected, the removal angered much of the community and while Sony never officially commented on its removal, the reward appears to have made a small comeback. When visiting the PlayStation Stars section on the official PlayStation app, an option to redeem $5 worth of wallet funds is once again available under the rewards section. Although there was previously a variety of denominations available, it looks like fans can now only redeem $5 in one transaction. Thankfully, it looks like fans can redeem the $5 reward as many times as they like, as long as they have enough points racked up.
It’s unclear if the reward’s removal was a mistake, or if Sony simply opted to bring back the option after seeing the immense amount of backlash from PlayStation Stars users, but it wouldn’t be the first time that the studio has made a controversial change to the program either. Back in August,PlayStation Stars updated its terms of service with numerous controversial changes. From October 24, any points earned by players will now expire within 12 months, as opposed to the previous period of 24 months. The second change, which takes effect from May 11, 2025, will see users unable to earn points from PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
PlayStation Stars has often been compared to Microsoft Rewards, but the numerous controversial changes have left a sour taste in user’s mouths. Over on Reddit, userrunealex007said they’ve “lost trust in this program,” while userOptimal_Bottle_1479also clearly doesn’t trust PlayStation Stars anymore, saying, “Redeeming a bunch now before it disappears again.”
