Summary

Overwatch 2recently teased future Overwatch: Classic game mode ideas, including one that could take hero balance back to where it was before the original game launched. IfOverwatch 2were to do this, players could try out hero abilities that never actually made it to the game, such as Bastion’s Configuration: Sentry shield or Remote Mine.

On November 12,Overwatch 2began Overwatch: Classic, a limited-time game mode that brings heroes back to where they were in the first game in 2016. Though Overwatch: Classic only lasts until December 2, Blizzard has already expressed interest in bringing the event back again, visiting different periods ofOverwatchhistory each time.

However, it seemsOverwatch 2could actually go even further back in time than 2016. Duringan interview withOverwatch 2streamer Spilo, game director Aaron Keller spoke about various snapshots of the game’s history the dev team would like to revisit in future Overwatch: Classic events, saying, “Here’s these moments afterOverwatchshipped, and maybe in a crazy world, here’s a moment or two from beforeOverwatchshipped as well, which could be a lot of fun.” While far from confirmation, this impliesOverwatch 2is considering rolling things back to beta or even alpha builds of the original FPS.

Overwatch: Classic Could Bring Back Beta Builds

While many heroes in the open beta were similar to what they were at launch, characters like Bastion were quite different. The robot got a 1000-health frontal barrier in Configuration: Sentry mode until release, and in even earlier builds, he had an Ultimate called Remote Mine – a devastating trap that moved similarly to Junkrat’s RIP-Tire, which then laid in wait until an enemy triggered it.

The prospect of seeing these and other pre-launch abilities make their way intoOverwatch 2in this mode was exciting for many fans. Players have enjoyed the throwback event so far, though it has also reminded themhow farOverwatchhas come in the last eight years. Overall, Overwatch: Classic seems to be extremely popular – and given Blizzard was waiting to hear feedback before committing to more events, additional runs of the game mode seem extremely likely now.

“Here’s these moments afterOverwatchshipped, and maybe in a crazy world, here’s a moment or two from beforeOverwatchshipped as well, which could be a lot of fun.”

In addition to Overwatch: Classic,Overwatch 2players can try out Hazard, the new Tank hero coming in Season 14, from now through November 25. Then, shortly after the next season begins, fans can expect two different 6v6 tests to take place: one around December 17, and another early next year. There are a lot of exciting things happening inOverwatch 2right now, and with more Overwatch: Classic runs almost certainly on the horizon, that isn’t likely to change any time soon.
