Hoshino Aqua is a complex character, more so than just being reincarnated into the popular idol Ai’s child. Before becoming Aqua, he had his own grievances and mental anguish that he had yet to resolve.
InOshi no Ko, Aqua has a deep hatred for the mastermind behind his mother’s death. While this hatred and vengeance was likely due to witnessing Ai’s death and loving her as a fan and son,in Season 2,bits of his past have been revealed, which begs the question of how deep Aqua’s trauma runs.
What is the Significance of Aqua’s Trauma?
Hoshino Aquamarine, more commonly known as Aqua, is the reincarnation of Amamiya Gorou, a doctor who worked at the hospital where Hoshino Ai was preparing to give birth. After learning about her from his former patient Tendouji Sarina, Dr. Amamiya was star-struck by Ai and genuinely wished to assist her in the birth of her twins.
However, with stardom also comes stalkers and crazy fans with delusions. Unfortunately, Dr. Amamiya, after uncovering a possible stalker, was shortly killed when trying to apprehend the stalker outside the hospital where Ai was situated. During Ai’s time at the hospital, Dr. Amamiya becomes a fan of hers after being introduced to the pop star through Sarina.
I want to watch over the one who walks the path she wanted to walk.
Although Dr. Amamiya wished to help Ai birth her twins safely, after learning that Ai had no family and was an orphan, once again, Dr. Amamiya became starstruck with Ai’s ambitions to carry on her career as an idol and grew her family. At first, it was believed that this was due to Dr. Amamiya being Ai’s fan; however, after learning about his past, Dr. Amamiya likely had additional motives to assist Ai.
These motives were soon learned in Chapter 75, in which Aqua reveals his past toAkaneduring their visit to his home in Miyazaki. Here, we learn that Dr. Amamiya was orphaned at birth due to his mother dying from a postpartum hemorrhage. His mother hid her pregnancy from her parents and thus delivered Dr. Amamiya in her home. Unfortunately, she died from blood loss before the ambulance arrived.
He was soon sent to live with his grandparents, and the situation in their home was awkward, as he did not get along with his grandfather. Dr. Amamiya’s lack of a mother figure in childhood was likely why he became a gynecologist, and this trauma of growing up without one was possibly the reason he wished to help Ai with her birth, as he inherently knew what it was like to grow up without parents.

As mentioned above, before Dr. Amamiya reincarnated and became Hoshino Aqua, he had his own unresolved trauma he had been dealing with. To cope with growing up as an orphan and living in awkward conditions with his grandparents, Dr. Amamiya became a gynecologist to resolve his childhood emotional distress.
After being reincarnated as Aqua, he had the opportunity to live as the son of a popular idol and fulfill his dream of having a mother figure. As Aqua grew up with Ai as his mother, he became more attached to her as he witnessed her stardom up close and personal. However, he also cared for her and wished her the best.
For me, acting is my form of revenge.
What makes Aqua’s trauma run so deep is that he becomes orphaned twice. In his previous life, Aqua was able to cope with his situation because he never knew what it was like to have a mother; therefore, he was unaware of what it was like to lose a mother figure. However, after becoming Aqua and becoming attached to Ai, the idol, and his mother, Aqua could not help but love her as her son.
Aqua suffered significant trauma on the day Ai died and thus developed Post-traumatic stress disorder from the ordeal. Each time Aqua were to relive the events of Ai’s death, he would have a severe physical reaction to the memory, which added fuel to his search for revenge. In the beginning, it was first believed that Aqua wanted to avenge Ai for the horrible death she faces by being killed by her stalker, withher ex as the mastermind.
However, after learning the truth about Aqua’s past before his reincarnation, Aqua’s motivations became clear. Although becoming orphaned once more was not a defining factor inAqua’s motivations for revenge, what he experienced in his past life was certainly another means for Aqua’s actions.
WhileRuby, Aqua’s twin sister, could accept Miyako as their adoptive mother somewhat, Aqua could not do so. As Aqua had previously been orphaned and had to witness Ai’s death, the traumatic experience was too much for him to bear, as Ai’s presence in his life left no room for a substitute.
Additionally, in Chapter 75, Aqua, in his previous life, was unusually persistent about a mother’s role in her children’s lives. His insistence on how a mother should behave was likely due to the lack of his own mother, which is why he questions or condemns mothers who behave poorly, as in the case of Tendouji Sarina. As mentioned above, these feelings, in addition to what he experienced as Aqua, were likely the reason why his trauma ran so deep.
