Summary

Gal Gadot’s era asWonder Womanmay be over. However, those who love the superheroine will witness more of her backstory in an upcoming TV series, but probably with a new face.

Gadot catapulted to fame when she was cast asWonder Woman. She made her debut inBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicein 2016 and her portrayal was widely praised. She starred in two stand-alone films, Wonder Woman(2017) andWonder Woman 19984(2020) directed by Patty Jenkins. There was an initial plan forWonder Woman 3with Gadot reprising the lead role and Jenkins directing the third installment. However, it was scrapped when James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022, when the duo decided to restructure DCU and recast some significant characters, includingSuperman. Although Gadot is unlikely to return asWonder Woman, a prequel TV series,Paradise Lost, is in the works that will give fans more information about Diana Price, aka Wonder Woman’s background.

One fan brought upWonder Woman’s originin Threads, asking Gunn if many know about her backstory. Her origin story revealed that she was sculpted from clay by her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and the Greek Gods gave her life with superhuman powers. The fan was wondering if Gunn’s circle had a different take on her origin. “Not as many people do - also because she’s had various origin stories,” Gunn replied.

Another fan asked if Gunn had something to share aboutParadise Lostand if it was in “active development” because they were very excited when it was announced and were looking forward to watching it. “Very active development,” Gunn replied. In July, Gunn also gave an update about Paradise Lost onThread. He clarified that “Nothing is ‘in production’ unless it’s been greenlit,” such as the case withSuperman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns. Apparently, the project is not yet in development because it has no scripts yet, but they will work on it once the scripts are done. This could also be the reason why they have yet to announce any casting for the project. “Paradise Lost like many other titles known and unknown is still in very active development - it will be in production once we have a script or scripts we think are great and ready to shoot, never before,” the filmmaker explained. “As an aside, we aren’t officially cast on anything that isn’t greenlit.”

It’s very likely that Gunn would recastWonder Woman. So, fans should not expect to see Gadot in her superhero costume for the upcoming TV series. One online user suggested on Thread that “Wonder Womandoesn’t have to be played by an A-lister” while pointing out that Gadot wasn’t one when she landed the role.Gunn fired back, saying he only “hired the best actors for the role.” At present, Gunn and Safran have yet to announce new names for the nextBatmanandWonder Woman, but they will likely do so in the future. As the filmmaker said,Paradise Lostis not yet in production, so it might still take years before it will be released since there are a lot of projects in the pipeline. But Gunn assured fans that the project would happen and they were actively working on it.
