Zoan Devil Fruits are said to have wills of their own, even before being consumed. This seems to partially explain the fascinating phenomenon ofinanimate objects that managed to “consume” a Zoan. This was apparently a method discovered byDr. Vegapunksome time prior to the main story.
Like any living beings who consume a Zoan, inanimate objects can gain properties of the animal whose Devil Fruit they consumed. Unfortunately, they also have the weaknesses associated with a living being, such as pain, fear, and vulnerability to sickness. These objects are all shown to be quite loyal to their owners.
6Lassoo
Babe’s Bazooka
Babe, otherwise known as Mr. 4 inBaroque Works, is the first person noted to own a Zoan object. His dachshund bazooka, Lassoo, shoots explosive baseballs, weighing as much as cannonballs that Babe hits with his mighty 4-ton baseball bat. Lassoo is very obedient, and is willing to shoot when his owner asks. Since his escape from prison, Babe has realized his dream of becoming a pizza delivery boy, working as one in the recently re-opened Spiders Cafe. Lassoo serves as the cafe’s mascot.
It is unclear how exactly Babe came into possession of Lassoo. Despite his strength, Babe is notably unintelligent, enough so that Crocodile gave the weaker Galdino a higher rank than him. It is possible that, despite being categorized as a recent breakthrough, the actual science behind the creation of a Zoan object is easy to replicate. If Zoans do have minds of their own, it is equally possible that the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund simply wanted to possess Babe’s gun.
5Funkfreed
Spandam’s Sword
Spandam is an utterly incompetent agent of the World Government, afforded his previous leadership positions inCipher Pol 9 and 5, due to nepotism rather than any sort of genuine skill. He is detested by his own colleagues, as well as those who have been wronged as a result of his and his father’s actions. Despite the World Government being the ones who afford him the level of protection he has, he even conspired to overthrow them, and was not punished too severely when he failed. He is the second known owner of a Zoan object, possessing an Elephant Sword named Funkfreed.
Funkfreed is Spandam’s sole companion, and likely his only means of defense, due to his own pathetic physical strength. Spandam is not particularly skilled at swordplay either, meaning Funkfreed is basically without his direct assistance in most fights. Much like his owner, Funkfreed is quite cowardly, and a poor fighter to boot. This is reflected in the sword’s friendly and unassuming appearance as an elephant. While Funkfreed’s backstory is not elaborated on, Spandam is shown to have had a pet elephant in his childhood, possibly cementing his affinity for the animal.
4Smiley
Caesar Clown’s Toxic Gas
Caesar Clown is a scientist who previously worked alongside Dr. Vegapunk. Unlike his colleague, Caesar is known to be deeply unethical, and cares little about whether others live or die as a result of his actions. Smiley is one of many deadly experiments of his. The being originated as an illegal chemical weapon of mass destruction, that Caesar detonated onPunk Hazard.
When Caesar returned to the island, he compressed the HS2 gas from the explosion into a slime, which he then “fed” the Devil Fruit, thus Smiley was “born.” This proves that Zoan Fruits can be “eaten” by things that are not purely solid. Caesar decided to release Smiley to kill the Straw Hat Pirates and the G-5 Marines who were on the island. As a purely toxic being, it killed Caesar’s men when it was released as well. Ultimately, it was countered, but not defeated by Luffy and his companions.
Instead, Caesar killed the being himself by feeding it a substance that resembled a wrapped candy. This led Smiley to feel excruciating pain and transformed its “corpse” into a petrifying gas known as Shinokuni. This makes Smiley the first Zoan Inanimate Object to have “died” in the series. A nearby apple transformed into a Devil Fruit when Smiley died, presumably meaning the Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl can now be claimed by another.
3Bunbuku
Kozuki Sukiyaki’s Teapot
Kozuki Sukiyaki was the former Shogun of Wano Country and the previous Daimyo of Kuri. He is also the father of the lateKozuki Oden. Since his deposition, Sukiyaki has gone into hiding, living under the alias of Tenguyama Hitetsu. During this time, he has acted as a mentor to Kurozumi Tama, despite the historical animosity between their clans. After Momonosuke was established as the Shogun, regaining power for the Kozuki clan, Sukiyaki remained in hiding, only revealing himself to a select few. As a hermit, he is the owner of the most recently identified Zoan object in canon, a Tanuki Teapot named Bunbuku.
Bunbuku is notable as the only canon Zoan object thus far not to be a weapon of some sort. Instead, it was a simple teapot Sukiyaki owned prior to its transformation. Its name is a reference toBunbuku Chagama, a Japanese folktale about a tanuki that becomes a teapot. As it is now a living being, Bunbuku cannot be used to boil water, as doing so would hurt it. Bunbuku instead seems to be a pet to Sukiyaki and Tama, usually accompanying one or the other at certain points in the story.
2Alpacacino
Shuzo’s Bazooka
Shuzo was a longarm who was previously a member of the Neo Marines, the splinter movement created by Z, a former Admiral, who felt the Marines did not do enough to punish pirates. He wishes to usurp the second-in-command spot in the organization from Ain, despite her overpowering him in their fight for the position. As a result, he refuses to follow her orders. Shuzo was eventually defeated by Luffy, and subsequently arrested by Vice Admiral Momonga, who claimed he would be sent to Impel Down.
Alpacacino is Shuzo’s Alpaca Bazooka. Like Lassoo, transforming into an animal has not hindered his functionality as a bazooka. Alpacacino tends to nod in agreement with his owner, although he does not appear to be above criticizing Shuzo if necessary, such as when he gave away their identity as Neo Marines. His name is likely derived from the iconic american actor,Al Pacino.
1Pato
Patrick Redfield’s Pen
Patrick “Red” Redfield was a pirate who was considered a rival to the likes of Roger and Whitebeard in his prime. However, his own lack of a subsequent impact has caused him to be far less renowned than either of them since. Red was previously a Level 6 Prisoner in Impel Down, who was inadvertently freed by Teach during his effort to recruit from Level 6 inmates for the Blackbeard Pirates.
Red’s longtime companion is Pato, a Bake-danuki Pen. While Pato’s Devil Fruit has similar roots to Bunbuku’s, it is distinguished by being a Mythical Zoan, whereas Bunbuku’s Devil Fruit is based on the real life Tanuki. Pato is capable of transforming leaves into objects and people by writing on them with his tail, which looks like the tip of a pen. Pato was previously separated from Red upon his imprisonment. When Red escaped, he disrespected his former companion, believing Pato had abandoned him.
However, after Monkey D. Luffy gains his respect, Red decides to rebuild his friendship with Pato, with the two becoming companions once more. Pato is notably the alias Red was known by as a rookie, implying he holds great value to him. Pato is relatively unique as far as inanimate object Zoans go, as he is capable of speech.
