Summary
The developers behindCult of the Lamb, one of 2022’s most highly regarded games, have expressed their disappointment with being snubbed from the Best Community Support category at this year’s Game Awards.Cult of the Lambwas initially released in the summer of 2022 and went on to earn a nomination for Best Independant Game at that year’s Game Awards, but ultimately lost out to BlueTwelve and Annapurna Interactive’s popular cat gameStray.
The nominations for the tenth annual Geoff Keighley-hosted Game Awards have recently been revealed, though not without some controversy. Specifically, the Game of the Year category has stirred up quite a conversation online about whether DLC should be considered for the award, asElden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree has secured a nomination for the grand prize. Some believe that the DLC feels so much like a new game that it deserves the nod, while others hold true to the fact that DLCs require access to their base games to be played, and are therefore not standalone entities. Other fans of the Game Awards raise the idea of DLCs having their own category altogether.
It seems The Game Awards is also catching flak from developers whose games have been snubbed. On Twitter, Massive Monster, the studio behind2022’sCult of the Lamb, voiced its disappointment that the game didn’t receive a nomination for Best Community Support. The tweet kicks off a 15-tweet-long thread highlighting everything the team has done forCult of the Lambplayers this year, including its two major Unholy Alliance and local co-op updates, hostingCult of the Lamb-themed weddings for fans, releasing animated shorts, comics, music, and a whole lot more.Cult of the Lambended the thread cordially, wishing luck to the five games that did earn the Community Support nominations.
Cult of the Lamb Upset At Game Awards Snub
WhileCult of the Lambwas ultimately left out, the Best Community Support category is instead populated with the likes of last year’s Game of the Year winnerBaldur’s Gate 3,Final Fantasy 14,Fortnite,Helldivers 2, andNo Man’s Sky. Some of these games have popped up in this category several times over the years, but it’s surprising to see a 2024 game inHelldivers 2make the list, as the developers had significantly less time to do good for its community than the other games that have been out for years. Massive Monster isn’t the only dev studio to take issue with being left out of a Game Awards category this year, as Playground Games was similarly upset thatForza Horizon 5was snubbed from Best Ongoing Game.
Despite the controversies and complaints,The Game Awards is set to go live on December 12. It’ll be interesting to see which of the aforementioned titles wins Best Community Support, and whetherElden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree can be the first ever DLC to win Game of the Year. Gamers can also expect tons of big game reveals and trailers as part of the show, as is standard practice.
