Ryan Murphy’s anthology seriesMonsterhas already been renewed by Netflix for another exciting third season and now true-crime fans can feast their eyes on some behind-the-scenes images of Charlie Hunnam as he gears up to jump into the shoes of the notorious serial killer, Ed Gein. Initially, there was a bit of confusion about whom the next season would be about, with some fans thinking that John Wayne Gacy, the sadistic Killer Clown, would become Murphy’s next subject. However,Netflixofficially confirmed that the focus would be on Gein, a serial killer also known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, whose gruesome crimes gained worldwide notoriety in the late 1940s and 1950s.

Every season ofMonsterhas focused on different true-crime stories, with the very first one honing into the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters, who portrayed the serial killer and sex offender, nicknamed the Milwaukee Cannibal. Season two ofMonster, titledThe Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, starred Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez as the Menendez brothers who were convicted for the murders of their parents. Ryan Murphy, who also directedAmerican Horror Story, said that season three ofMonsterwould be titledThe Original Monster, due to Gein’s crimes coming before the likes of Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy.

New behind-the-scenes images of Charlie Hunnam as the horrendous killer Ed Gein have been snapped. Hunnam can be seen wearing an oversized red and black checkered flannel jacket and dark brown trousers. Even Hunnam’s usual luscious blonde locks have been trimmed back to mimic Gein’s 1950s comb-over and a closely shaved face. Hunnam, who has starred in other series' that includeSons of AnarchyandKai inRebel Moon, is joined in season three byThe Big Bang TheoryandRoseannestar Laurie Metcalf, who will be playing Gein’s mother, Augusta Wilhelmine Gein. Other cast members include Tom Hollander, who will play Alfred Hitchcock, and Olivia Williams as Alma Reville, Hitchcock’s wife.

Alarm bells first began ringing around the real-life Gein after he was suspected of killing a hardware store owner in 1957, with police then finding not only the body of the murdered woman hanging inside Gein’s house but the savage discovery of bones, skin, and skulls of his past victim’s made into household items that included bowls, spoons, and bedposts. Later, it was uncovered that he also visited his local graveyard in La Crosse, Wisconsin to dig up bodies to take back to his farm. Gein’s terrible crimes were the inspiration behind countless horror movie characters, likePsycho’s Norman Bates,The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface,andSilence of the Lambs' Buffalo Bill.

As yet,Monsterseason threedoesn’t have a release date, but Ryan Murphy previously revealed that filming would begin on 31st October, so the highly anticipated series is still in its early production days. If the timeline of the third season ofMonstermirrors previous seasons, it’s likely fans won’t get to watch it until the fall of 2025, as the first two seasons were both released in mid-September.
