Summary
NetherRealm Studios has added a new skin for Tanya in the fighting gameMortal Kombat 1, but the fandom isn’t happy with the design. The cosmetic is supposed to be modeled after the aesthetic of 1993’sMortal Kombat 2, which was released under Midway at the time for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Intended to be an original design mixed with another game from the franchise, Tanya’s skin is notably underwhelming to theMortal Kombat 1player base.
Mortal Kombat 1stands as the 12th main installment in the iconic IP and the second reboot succeeding 2011’s entry. The game has received a follow-upKhaos Reignsexpansion since its 2023 debut, and according to studio head Ed Boon, content will continue at a steady pace while NetherRealm works on another mystery project.Mortal Kombat 1recently introduced the new Ghostface fighterfrom theScreamfranchise, and the killer has three identities hiding behind the iconic mask to appeal to horror fans.
NetherRealm recently announced that the newMK2skin for Tanya was now available in theMK1store, with the fighter sporting a primarily yellow ensemble. Different colorways are also available for the Edenian Deceiver, but fans were thrown off by the character’s hairstyle. Since the outfit is meant to be a nod to theMK2era, players were confused as to why the character’s hairstyle echoed her appearance inMK4.Tanya has some impressive fatalities in herMortal Kombat 1arsenal, but the character never appeared inMK2. Therefore, fans think the fighter’s cosmetic design leaves something to be desired.
Mortal Kombat 1’s New MK2-Inspired Tanya Skin Is Disappointing Fans
Fans previously criticizedMortal Kombat 1’s Deception skin for Mileena, released in October. The community felt the cosmetic did not align with the character’s background or compare to the original 2004 game. A similar backlash has surfaced with Tanya’s skin, as many players are against the mix of styles fromMK2andMK4. Many would have preferred a straightMK4reimaging for Tanya’s new cosmetic, instead of trying to guess what the character’s outfit would have looked like inMK2,which has only produced a lackluster work of fiction.
A recentMortal Kombat 1leak has teased possible festive skins being addedfor certain characters. Frost and Sareena will allegedly be getting into the holiday spirit decorated with fairy lights, and other characters, Ermac, Rain, and more, will seemingly receive new looks as well. Judging by howMK1skins have been received up until now, the community will likely air their honest opinion on this set too.
