But while Creaking’s unique mechanics play into this Pale Garden’s gimmick and set it apart from other mobs, it might not be as original a concept as Mojang had hoped, given how similar it behaves to a stapleDoctor Whomonster, the Weeping Angels.
After first appearing in the episode “Blink” ofDoctor Whoin 2007, the Weeping Angels have since become iconic monsters alongside the Daleks and Cybermen thanks in part to their ability to turn to stone when observed as a defense mechanism. The Weeping Angels' popularity beyondDoctor Whohas led to numerous references across pop culture, includingEaster eggs in games likeThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,Dishonored’s DLC, and specifically as a mod inMinecraft. As a result, with the Creaking mob sharing near identical mechanics to the Weeping Angel mod, this could openMinecraftto future mobs inspired by fan-made mods.
The Similarities Between Minecraft’s Creaking and the Weeping Angels
When the Creaking was revealed duringMinecraftLive 2024, developer Gnembon advised that players “don’t blink,” a line immortalized byDoctor Who’s Weeping Angels, leading players to draw comparisons between the new mob and the sci-fi monster as seen below.
When breaking down the mechanics of the Creaking and Weeping Angels, these similarities are hard to ignore as both can only move when unobserved and neither can be directly harmed. While Mojang may have taken inspiration from other sources for its new mob, the unsettling, other-worldly qualities ofMinecraft’s Pale Garden and Creakinglend themselves to the same fantastical horror asDoctor Who’s Weeping Angels.
Minecraft’s Creaking Seems Eerily Familiar to Fan-Made Mobs
However, the trope of a monster that only moves when nobody is looking isn’t exclusive to the Creaking or the Weeping Angels, prominently featuring throughout the horror genre as mannequins and statues, likeLethal Company’s Coil-Head. Others have comparedMinecraft’s new mob to another similar fictional monster, SCP-173. Yet creatures with this gimmick, like the Weeping Angels and SCP-173, have been adapted by fans and added toMinecraftthrough mods. Now that theCreaking has been introduced toMinecraftwith the same familiar gimmick, these mods may lose their original appeal beyond fan service to their respective communities.
Minecraft’s Creaking Could Help Carry Over Other Mob Mods
If Mojang were to incorporate more ideas from fan mods into the vanilla version of the game, then it would be spoiled for choice given how many fan-made mods already exist. In keeping with Mojang’s smaller updates, however, it could instead focus on making individual changes or additions toMinecraft, just as the introduction of Creaking is the only new mob in the Pale Garden. Much like how the Weeping Angel mod may have inspired the Creaking, other mob-centric mods could lead Mojang toshake up the mob status quo inMinecraft.
With this in mind, Mojang could focus on mods that work with its existing gameplay rather thanMinecraftmods that feel like a different game. It’s unlikely Mojang would directly adopt the mods. However, much like the Weeping Angel or SCP-173 mods and Creaking, it could take these concepts and add its own creative twist when making them official Minecraft mobs.
