Acclaimed director Mike Flanagan has shared an exciting and also eye-opening update on how far along hisStephen Kingadaptation of theCarrieTV show has come. Flanagan is probably one of the busiest filmmakers in the business right now, with a host of adaptations that include the in-development “The Dark Tower”, the soon-to-be released “The Life of Chuck”, and the currently untitled,The Exorcistmovie. However, King’s classic 1974 novel,Carrie, is certainly one that manyhorrorfans have their eyes firmly set on.
Published in 1974,CarriewasStephen King’s very first novelthat saw the light of day but, he had already written four others before it that hadn’t been made public. In true Hollywood fashion, the book was then picked up and turned into a movie starring Sissy Spacek in 1976, which told the story of an introverted teenager with unbelievable psychic powers. However, her powers have a dark side, and when she gets angry, she can wield dangerous telekinetic skills, especially against her high-school bullies. AnotherCarriemovieadaptation was crafted in 2013, which starred Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore but, unfortunately, it failed to leave a lasting impression, scoring a mediocre rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Carrie’s Development Is Much Further Along Than Most Fans Thought
Taking toBluesky, the Twitter/X alternative, Mike Flanagan replied to a fan asking if there would be anotherHaunting Ofseries, akin toBly Manor.Flanagan stated that that chapter of his life was now closed, and he would be putting all his brain power into his newAmazon TV series,Carrie. The director also gave fans a bit of a welcome treat by expressing that Carrie’s development was much further along than anyone had realized, saying “We are 6 weeks into the writer’s room!.”
AlthoughCarrieis in its early development stages, a script is reportedly still to be written, as well as figuring out who will actually be cast in it. As with any series finding its footing, the development process can take some time before it sees the light of day but, at least according to Flanagan, it’s firing on all cylinders, and already has over a month of work put into it in some form. Flanagan previously said that he has messed up before when revealing who he will be casting in upcoming projects, so, we can assume that fans might not hear which actors will be joining the TV series for a while yet.
To add to his overflowing list of projects,Flanagan is also producing the zombie movieEpilogue, which will feature his wife, Kate Siegel, and David Dastmalchian. The premise ofEpiloguetells the story of a year after a zombie apocalypse terrorized the world, centering on a couple who set out on a treacherous journey to find a cure for their child who has been infected. Even though an announcement regardingCarrie’s release date will probably be quite a way off, fans can look forward toThe Exorcistwhen it arrives in theaters on Friday, March 13th, 2026.
