Summary
The long-awaitedStar Trek: Section 31movie is set to premiere on Paramount+ on January 24th, 2025. Recently, fans got some moreinformation about the movie’s charactersfrom the officialStar Treksocial media accounts.
Paramount+ officially announced they’d be moving forward with aSection 31series, starring Michelle Yeoh in her role as the Mirror Universe version of Philippa Georgiou in 2019. Unfortunately, the pandemic and production onStar Trek: Strange New Worldsbumped the series down the studio’s priority list. In April 2023, more than four years after the project was officially greenlit, Paramount+ announced that the series was redeveloped as a movie, set to release in 2025.
Fans got their first peek at the show and its characters at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, and this week, they finally got some more information in the form of character profiles released on the officialStar TrekInstagram page. So far, the page has shared profiles for Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), Melle (Humberly González), Zeph (Robert Kazinsky), and Quasi (Sam Richardson). Each profile includes a picture of the character, a tagline, and a “playing card” with some interesting details about their backstories and roles in Section 31.
Fuzz
Fuzz’s tagline dubs him “The Maniac” and his profile describes him as emotionally volatile, easily switching from laughter to rage. This description is fascinating because Fuzz appears to be Vulcan. Though he wouldn’t be the first Vulcan in theStar Trekuniverse to reject logic and give into his emotions. Nearly every series in the franchise has at least one episode whereVulcans abandon logicand let their emotions in. The result is almost always maniacal. So, that would fit Fuzz.
The other possibility is that Fuzz is Romulan. Romulans are virtually indistinguishable from Vulcans and the emotional volatility would make a lot more sense for a Romulan since theRomulans diverged from the Vulcanswhen they rejected logic in favor of emotion. A Romulan in Section 31 also makes sense, since the Federation is always trying to get more information about the Romulans.
Melle
Melle is “The Lover” and her description reveals that she’s Deltan. The Deltans are one of the lesser-known species in theStar Trekuniverse, though Lieutenant Ilia played a major role in the events depicted inStar Trek: The Motion Picture.
Deltans have a sexual magnetism so intense that they swear vows of celibacy when they enter Starfleet. Apparently, Melle has rejected that norm and uses her allure to her advantage in her work for Section 31.
Zeph
Zeph “The Machine” is described as a human mech. The body armor he’s seen wearing in all the promos is actually a mechanical exoskeleton, which he wears 24/7. This exoskeleton has built-in tools that he uses during his missions with Section 31.
When the first images of Zeph dropped, many fans assumed that his exoskeleton was Borg exo-plating, but actor who plays him debunked that theory, stating on social media that his character definitelyisn’t an ex-Borg. ThoughStar Trekhas featured one human with an exoskeleton, Melora Pazlar, hers was made to accommodate her disability. Zeph will be the first human in theStar Trekuniverse given an exoskeleton to enhance his effectiveness in the field.
Quasi
Quasi is also known as “The Enigma.” Though he appears human in the photos fans have seen, he’s actually a Chameloid, a rareStar Trekspecies that fans have only seen once, inStar Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Chameloids are shapeshifters, which a great quality for a Section 31 operative.
His description states he’s “disinterested in the ‘delusion’ of Utopia,” which suggests he’s disillusioned with Starfleet and the Federation. Or perhaps that his work with Section 31 has made him jaded and cynical.
Star Trekhas yet to release profiles for Alok (Omari Hardwick) and Rachel (Kacey Rohl), the other crew members from theSection 31posters that dropped earlier this year, so keep an eye on the officialStar TrekInstagram!
Star Trek
Star Trek is a space exploration franchise originally created by Gene Roddenberry. The series has spanned shows like The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Voyager. More recently, developer Scopely came out with Star Trek Fleet Command, a mobile title where you get to be captain of your own ship.
