Developer NetEase Games has allowed players to take its upcoming multiplayer hero shooter for a few test runs throughout the year, and soon it will be time for fans to step into the arena ofMarvel Rivalsfull-time. The game is set to launch in full on December 6, nearly four months removed from theMarvel Rivalsclosed beta back in the summer.
Since that successful test period, the developers behindMarvel Rivalshave shown off more of the 27 confirmed playable characters that gamers will be able to control, including the ever-patriotic Captain America. Steve Rogers was a relatively late confirmation to theMarvel Rivalslaunch roster, only being officially revealed alongside his friend/enemy Bucky “The Winter Solider” Barnes during the same Gamescom 2024 livestream that confirmed the game’s December release date.
Now that this release date is drawing nearer,Marvel Rivalshas confirmed a new character skin for Captain America that is a stark departure from the hero’s usual standard red-white-and-blue attire. According to a post on the officialMarvel RivalsTwitter page, a “Gladiator Captain America” skin will be available whenMarvel Rivalslaunches on December 6. This outfit was inspired by the medieval-style outfit Steve wore in the 2015 limited seriesPlanet Hulk, and was also available as an alternate outfit for Captain America inMarvel Vs. Capcom: Infiniteand the defunctMarvel’s Avengers.

The announcement of theMarvel RivalsGladiator Captain America skin came with a quote inspired by thePlanet Hulkcomics it debuted in, stating that “the devil and the captain reign as the champions” of Killiseum on the outskirts ofDoctor Doom’s home of Doomstadt. While this might just be a nod to the source material, some think that it might be a clue that Daredevil, Nightcrawler, or even Devil Dinosaur could be added as playable characters ahead ofMarvel Rivals’ official launch.
So far,Marvel Rivalshas generated plenty of buzz among online multiplayer shooter fans thanks to its closed beta test earlier this year, and looks to be a promising entry in the genre.
