Summary

The Lord of the Ringslegendary duo, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, share their opinions about fans who make art that showcases Merry and Pippin as more than just good friends. It’s fair to say that J.R.R. Tolkien’s work onThe Lord of the Ringsis nothing short of a masterpiece. Even for those who may not enjoy movies based around a fantasy fictional world, most can still appreciate how incredibly Tolkien can tap into characters to make them appealing and understood by almost everyone who either reads about them or watches them. His ability to immerse his audience into Middle-earth isn’t the only thing that the famous author was able to achieve.

Tolkien understood the friendships and love between characters just as well as he understoodThe Lord of the Rings’most darkest moments. The films purposefully never shied away from how important connections between some of its most beloved characters really were and, due to that, fans were able to witness some of the most heartfelt scenes exemplified throughout Peter Jackson’s entire trilogy. Of course, Sam and Frodo are a firm favorite too, but the two mischievous Hobbits, Merry and Pippin, who began their story together and ended it together, have been a constant source of fan art forLord of the Ringsenthusiasts who just can’t get enough of their wholesome relationship.

Lord of the Rings' Merry And Pippin Love Fan Art Shipping The Pair

Speaking to PinkNews at the premiere ofThe Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry and Pippin inPeter Jackson’s original trilogy, were asked about what they thought on fans ‘shipping’ their fictional characters, and if they thought Merry and Pippin were more than just good friends. With regard to one piece of fan art that showcases the pair topless and embracing, Boyd said that he thought the illustration was “really lovely” and it was one of his “favorite pieces ofLord of the Rings” fanart.

Monaghan went on to recall that inthe Tolkien books, Merry and Pippin are great friends and also first cousins, but he still didn’t see an issue withLord of the Ringsfans wanting to create their very own conception of what they wanted to see from the wholesome friendship. “That’s up to them, that’s a beautiful thing.” While the likes of Frodo and Sam had an ongoing friendship, Legolas and Gimli had an initially strained but loyal kinship by the end, and Bilbo and Gandalf had an incredibly respectful companionship,Merry and Pippin’s child-like connection has the closest relationship in friendship and in blood relation where as long as they were together, they could overcome anything.
