TheFar Cryfranchise is currently at a crossroads. For years now, Ubisoft has continued to use a very similar open-world formula, not just for theFar Cryseries, but for many of its other franchises, such asGhost Recon,Assassin’s Creed, and evenlast year’sAvatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Naturally, many fans have gotten a little tired of this same Ubisoft open-world formula.
Many hope that the nextFar Crywill finally be the one to shake things up, that it’ll be the one to add genuinely innovative, new mechanics, that it’ll introduce a new structure that offers fans something different to play. These fans might get their wish soon, as according to multiple leaks over the last year or so,Far Cry 7could be a significant departure from past entries.
A Tradition-Breaking Far Cry 7 Should Come with a Safe Alternative
Far Cry 7 Could Shake Up The Franchise’s Formula In Some Major Ways
All the way back in January 2023, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson published a report that claimedFar Cry 7was in development under the codename “Project Blackbird,” right alongside aFar Crymultiplayer survival game codenamed “Project Maverick.” In September 2023, Henderson returned with anotherFar Cry 7-centered report, this time spilling the beans on some alleged story and gameplay details.
According to Insider Gaming’s September 2023 report,Far Cry 7could feature a 24-hour time-limit, equating to 72 hours of in-game time. In those 24 real-world hours, players will apparently need to rescue their kidnapped family members from a conspiracy group named the “Sons of Truth.“Far Cry 7’s storycould be non-linear, meaning that players can rescue their family members in any order, at any time, with that potentially having an effect on the game’s ending.
Obviously, this rumored direction forFar Cry 7would be a major shift for the franchise, trading in the usual linear narrative that encourages exploration at the player’s own pace for a non-linear race against the clock. These drastic changes are exactly the type of shake-up that some fans have been wanting fromtheFar Cryfranchisefor a while now.
Far Cry 7 Could Release Alongside a Remake to Keep Both Crowds Happy
But while some fans would be thrilled at the prospect ofFar Cry 7taking the franchise in a completely new direction, others would prefer a mainline entry in the series to stick to its roots, and deliver a familiar experience. It might be a smart idea for Ubisoft to try and cater to both sides of the fence here, delivering an ambitious,tradition-breakingFar Cry 7while also releasing a more traditional entry right alongside it, and that traditional entry could be a remake.
WithFar Cry 3still being considered one of the most beloved entries in the franchise, and with it being well over a decade old, it’d be the perfect choice for a fully-fledged remake, though many fans have already had their fill ofFar Cry 3over the years. Instead, anunderrated entry likeFar Cry 2might be a better choice for a remake, giving the hidden gem of the series another chance in the spotlight.
If Ubisoft really wanted to deliver a special experience, it could remake the very firstFar Crygame, packaging it alongside a souped-up version of theFar Cry Instincts: Evolutioncampaign. This would offer fans a traditionalFar Cryopen-world experience while still giving them new content to explore.
