Farming resources is something that gamers will doconstantly, andFallout 76is a game that requires players to do a lot of grinding. From repairing weapons and armor pieces to crafting items and building bases, players will need to have a steady flow of resources to keep up with their crafting needs.
While it’s not one of the rarest materials in the game, getting oil in large quantitiescan be a bit of a challenge. However, there are some things that players can do and places they can visit to get a decent amount of oil. This guide will go overthe best ways to get oil inFallout 76.
Tag Items For Search
If you are looking for a specific resource, then you can tag items for search. This will turn on a little magnifying glass icon that will appear whenever you hover over a component that contains the resource you are looking for.
To set this up, pick up any item that contains the resource you are looking for. Once you have it in your inventory, open up your Pip-Boyand head to “Junk.” From here, look at the bottom of the Pip-Boy menu, there will be a button called “Component Review.” This will break down every junk item you are carrying and show you what each item is made from. This menu will also allow you to tag any resource you are looking for.
Junk That Contains Oil
There are plenty of junk items that contain oil. The list is quite extensive, so it’s much easier to tag items for search than it is to memorize all the items that contain oil. However, for those wanting to see each item in more detail, check out the table below:

Best Places To Farm Oil
Oil can be found all over the map. However, some places are more lucrative than others. It’s worth keeping in mind that if you are playing on a public server, it’s possible that other players could have already cleared out a location of its loot. Should you go to a place where there’s no junk to be found, simply hop servers.
With that in mind, some of thebest places to visit for farmingoil can be seen below:
The Cutting Fluid Recipe
One of the easiest ways to get lots of oil is by crafting and scrapping Cutting Fluid. The recipe to craft Cutting Fluid used to be incredibly difficult to obtain. While it is still rare, it’s not as valuable as it used to be. WhenWastelanderswas released, there was a small chance of being awarded this plan by following the quest “Hunter For Hire.” While it’s still possible to get the plan this way,it’s far easier to grind Mutated Events.
There’s a small chance of being awarded the Cutting Fluid Recipe each time youopen up a Mutated Package. The reason why this recipe is so valuable is that it turns relatively basic materials into oil.
Crafting Cutting Fluid costs the following materials:
Once crafted, Cutting Fluid can be broken down into 3 oil and 1 steel.
CAMP Items That Produce Oil
There are lots of CAMP resource items that players can buildin their bases. Some produce food, others produce drinks or chems, and some produce oil. Two main CAMP resources produce oil: The Nodding Donkey and The Motorized Butter Churn.
The Nodding Donkey is an Atomic shop item that can be purchased for 500 Atoms when available. The Motorized Butter Churn is a rare reward that is only obtainable during Fasnacht. However, the plan to craft the Motorized Butter Churn is tradable, so it’s possible to trade with other players in places likeMarket76 on Redditto get a copy of the plan.
Buying Oil From Traders And Other Players
For those with Caps to burn, you can purchase oil from both players and NPC Vendors. While there’s no guarantee that any particular player or vendor will sell oil, it’s always worth a look, just in case.
If you decide to purchase oil from NPC Vendors, then the best place to go is the Whitespring Mall. There are lots of vendors inside the mall. Most of them won’t have any oil, but some may have a few Bulk Oil available for purchase. Not only that, but some of the vendors may sell other junk items that contain some oil.
As for buying oil from players, check the activity menu on the map and take a look at what players are selling at their CAMPs. If you find a player selling a large amount of junk, then it might be worth visiting them, as they could be selling some oil.
Using Oil Extractors
One way to farm oil passively is to use oil extractors. There are a few locations dotted around the map where you may place your CAMP and build an oil extractor. For the most part, it’s not really worth building an entire CAMP around an oil extractor since they don’t generate a particularly large amount of oil. However, for those who want to build an oil deposit, one of the best locations to build is located just west of Vault 51. There are very few enemies in this area, making it an ideal place to call home.
Instead of building a CAMP over an oil deposit, certain workshops have oil depositsthat you can use. While you aren’t going to get a lot of oil from these places, they can be a decent way to squeeze out some extra oil. The workshops that have at least one oil deposit can be seen below:
What Is Oil Used For?
In its scrapped form, Waste Oil is used to craft a variety of top-tier items. From turrets and lights to weapons and armor pieces, oil is a key component needed to make a lot of crucial items.
Some of the most important items that require oil to craft can be seen below:
Out of all the things listed above, more often than not, players use oil to craft fuel and Power Armor Mods. Because of the importance of oil, it’s not uncommon for players to sell oil at an inflated price in their CAMP Vendors.
