Companions are a huge part ofDragon Age: The Veilguard, with nearly half of all quests being directly related to their stories and struggles. Thereby inviting players to immerse themselves in the fantasy world they find themselves in.
A common trend in Bioware games, like thepreviousDragon Agegamesas well as the entireMass Effectseries, is that the relationships between the player character — in this case, Rook — and their companions develop depending on the choices made. While the game does a great job of showing increases or decreases in companion approval through pop-up messages like Bellara Approves, Neve Approves, or Lucanis Greatly Approves, it only gives a general overview of the moment-to-moment effects your dialogue choices are having on your companions. Luckily, there is a way to check how each companion feels about you in detail. Here’s how.
How to Check Companion Bond Level in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Companion Bond/Relationship is displayed on the left side of the companion selection screen. To navigate here,open your inventoryand tab over the‘Companions’section on the top bar. Select the companion whose bond you want to check and click their name. Their current relationship status will show up on the left edge of the screen, just below their name, class, and background.
The number inside thecircle represents the Relationship/Bond levelthis companion has with you, and the circle around it is a meter. Every time you make a choice that your companion likes, and you see a pop-up notification like ‘Harding Approves,’ a little bit of this meter fills up. When the circle is complete, the number in the center ticks up, and you get to the next Relationship level.

What is Hero of the Veilguard
If you hover over the symbol above the companion’s name in their character selection screen, you’ll see a blurb about the‘Hero of the Veilguard’status. To put it simply, Hero of the Veilguard is a reward for fully completing a companion’s questline and resolving their inner turmoil.
It isnot limited to one character; all companions can get the ‘Hero of the Veilguard’ status as long as you complete their associated quests before the game ends. It is crucial to do so in order to get the best ending.
How to Check Companion Approval in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Beyond the numerical value of the Bond level of a companion, you can gauge how a companion feels about Rook and how they fit into the team by checking their approval status. Just below the Relationship level, you’ll see a small symbol followed by text. Consider it a general descriptor for how that companion is feeling right at that moment in the story, representing how good (or bad) their current relationship with Rook is. This gets automatically updated as you experience more things with the companion, go through key events in the story, or getinvolved with them in a romantic sense.
This is also where you cancheck if you’re locked into a Romance with a companion or not.One heart symbol means the companion is willing to enter an exclusive relationship with you. Two hearts on top of each other mean you’ve committed to this companion in a romantic relationship.
