During an appearance onWatch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes endorsed the idea ofOppenheimerstar Cillian Murphyplaying the character in HBO’sHarry PotterTV series. While the idea of Murphy playing Voldemort was proposed by a viewer, Fiennes wholeheartedly agreed with the fan casting. “Cillian is a fantastic actor,” Fiennes said. “That’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian. Yeah.”
TheHarry PotterTV series is still in its early stages, so casting has only just begun.Mark Rylance is reportedly the top choice to play Dumbledore, but as of this writing, no official casting announcement has been made. Considering how passionate theHarry Potterfanbase is, people likely have their ideas for who should play the iconic characters. But would a big name like Murphy agree to join theHarry PotterTV series if asked?
Murphy is fresh off his Oscar-winning performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s biopic on the eponymous “father of the atomic bomb.” While Murphy played the main role in theBritish period crime dramaPeaky Blindersfor six seasons over nearly 10 years, committing another decade of his career to theHarry PotterTV series might be a tall order.
Of course, Voldemort arguably has a small role in the first fewHarry Potterbooks, largely serving as a looming threat before making his triumphant return. So, whoever plays Voldemort in theHarry PotterTV series may not have to commit too much time to the show until later seasons. Regardless, this is all speculation. Murphy may be more than willing to play the character for a decade. However, this was a mere fan suggestion. Even with Fiennes' approval, Warner Bros. will certainly make its own decision, and there’s more than a good chance that they’ll pick someone else.
