One way he tries to do that is via poison, which he puts into a bottle of mead. Professor Horace Slughorn ends up possessing that bottle and intends to give it to Dumbledore as a gift,eventually leading to his death. Slughorn wasn’t aware that the bottle was poisoned, which is why he ended up giving the drink to Ron.
This takes place because Ron himself gets spiked with a love potion, and the impact of that having such an effect on him leads Harry Potter to take his friend to see Slughorn in a bid to try and help him. Slughorn hands Weasley an antidote and then a glass of the mead to try and help him come around, but that has an adverse impact as the poison takes hold and almost kills him. It certainly isn’t what Malfoy intended with his master plan in terms of the poison, but it nearly takes down a different rival of his.

This leads to one of the most graphic scenes in theHarry Potterseries when Ron is writhing around in pain on the floor with foam coming out of his mouth to highlight the impact that the poison has on him. The poison is clearly strong, and that’s because it’s designed to take down Dumbledore, which is why a young student is impacted so severely.
Fortunately for Ron, his best friend is on hand to save the day. This is the year when Harry starts to focus heavily on potions after finding the Half-Blood Prince’s book, which teaches him everything he needs to know. He quickly remembers a bezoar he had given to Professor Slughorn and ends up shoving it down Ron’s throat. Harry learned this in a previous year’s potions class exam, and that knowledge ended up saving Ron’s life. The impact of the bezoar is instantaneous, and while he still has to spend time in the hospital wing, it keeps Ron alive.
The Way It Impacts His Love Life
Almost dying via poisoning is a low point for Ron, but it inadvertently helpshis eventual romance with Hermione Granger. It had been teased that the two had feelings for each other prior to this incident, but Ron’s behavior in the hospital confirms his true thoughts despite his relationship with Lavender Brown at the time. She comes to visit him as Ron begins to stir and expects him to say her name as he sleeps, but that isn’t what happens.
Instead, he mutters Hermione’s name multiple times as Lavender storms off, and Hermione stays to comfort her injured friend. While this isn’t the big moment that they declare their true feelings for each other, as Ron is initially confused as to why he’d ask for Hermione, it does confirm what audiences have been thinking before this moment and works as the next big step toward them becoming an official couple later in the franchise.
The entire plot serves as aharsh reminder that the story is very seriousand has high stakes for the people involved.
