Summary
AGame of Thronessequel series was canceled due to story issues. However, HBO boss Casey Bloys hinted at a possible second chance for the scrapped idea.
AfterGame of Thronesended, HBO started developing spinoffs to continue capitalizing on the franchise’s popularity. One such spinoff was aGame of Thronessequel series with Jon Snow. The series would follow Jon Snow after theGame of Thronesseries finale, in which he was exiled from Westeros and journeyed North of the Wall with the Wildings. Kit Harington was poised to reprise his role as Jon Snow had the series moved forward. However, the project was scrapped when those involved couldn’t settle on a story.
During an HBO Press event (viaDeadline), Bloys confirmed theGame of Thronessequel series with Jon Snow is no longer in development. However, the HBO boss implied theJon Snow spinoff could be revisitedin the future. “Maybe we’ll try again,” Bloys said, though he did not explain what would determine whether HBO revives the Jon Snow sequel series.
Even if the Jon Snow sequel series is never revived, HBO has multipleGame of Thronesspinoffs in various stages of development.House of the Dragonseason 3 will continue the prequel storyline chronicling the Targaryen civil war (roughly 200 years beforeGame of Thrones) and production is underway onA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a prequel series that follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg.At the press event, Bloys explained why these two shows are the only ones to move forward so far:
So far [those] are the only ones that we felt could go the distance. I mean, practically speaking, you don’t want to overdo any anything. There’s no blinking green lights on any other ones. At the moment, we take our time with them, with the development, and only do them when we can serve it.
One of thedevelopingGame of Thronesspinoffs is10,000 Ships. Set 1000 years before the original series,10,000 Shipstells the story of the legendary warrior Queen Nymeria and how she led the Rhoynar people from Essos to Dorne after their homeland was ravaged. This project was initially scrapped because the events it depicted were considered too distant from the mainGame of Thronesstory. However, HBO seemingly reconsidered its stance and revived the project. So, reviving the Jon Snow sequel series is not entirely outside the realm of possibility.
Some fans would love the see the Jon Snow sequel series move forward. TheGame of Thronesseries finale was widely panned, as were the final two seasons overall, ending the once-acclaimed series with a whimper. Some fans view a sequel series as a second chance to end the story on a high note. However, others believedropping the Jon Snow spinoff is good, as the series would have been tainted by the lambastedGame of Thronesfinale and forced to work off the poorly-received material it left behind.
