Summary
The search for the lead actress of the upcoming Amazon Prime VideoTomb Raiderseries has been on the hunt for a while now. It looks like the Phoebe Waller-Bridge helmed show is zeroing in on the prime target. And while Amazon MGM isn’t confirming anything just yet, it’s an interesting choice for someone who made her bones in one of the most popular shows in the history of television and has kept a relatively low profile since.
The people behindTomb Raiderhave apparently been pretty careful about the selection, having spent the last few months taking a long hard look at several differentcandidates to play Lara Croft. Alicia Vikander and Angelina Jolie have previously played the live-action version of the character. There’s also been a popular animatedTomb Raidershow on Netlfix as the character is seeing a bit of a resurgence of late.
Amazon Prime Series Zeroes In On Lara Croft Actress
Deadlinereports that after Amazon looked at several different candidates to take over the role, it landed onGame of Thronesalum Sophie Turner. Now, assuming an official agreement can be reached, Turner will play the lead in aTomb Raiderseries, which Amazon MGM head Jennifer Salke called “epic” and “globe-trotting” when she unveiled the streaming giant was making another original series based on a video game. The company also said that this live-actionTomb Raiderseries has been a passion project for writer/executive producer Waller-Bridge. TheFleabagcreator was also quite high on the character and the kind of things she can offer in a television show dedicated to her.
Turner has beenbuilding up her resumein more grounded dramas, including two British shows,JoanandHaven. The latter is also set to air on Amazon Prime Video, and it certainly seems as though the actress and the streaming giant are forging quite the business relationship.
One of the most interesting things about this deal is that one has to wonder if Turner would take this deal if it means she’s not able to return to the role of Sansafor theGame of Thronesmovie. Granted that film has just been confirmed as even existing so there’s timetable out there one when it might be shooting and it’s certainly possible there would be no conflict depending on what it does go into production and how many seasons and when theTomb Raiderseason is planning.
For now, it’s important to note that there isn’t an official deal here yet. While Turner is expected to accept the role, there’s no guarantee that she will, nor that she’ll officially get an offer, even with reports of Amazon circling.
It’s also interesting how much streaming services in general are leaning into video game adaptations. And while they are leaning in, most of them have been far higher quality than in the past. Netlfix hasArcaneand theTomb Raideranimated series. Amazon just hit it big with the Fallout series and is preparing to shoot a Season 2.
