Spoiler Alert: Dawntrail MSQ/Raid spoilers follow.
Summary
AFinal Fantasy 14player experienced a bizarre bug that showed the game getting confused between who was responsible for attacks going on in a fight. It turns out thatFinal Fantasy 14has a bug that breaks this element of the game if an NPC and a player have the same name in a fight.
Final Fantasy 14players are currently delving into the content added to the title in the7.1 post-Dawntrail update. Like any MMORPG,Final Fantasy 14is constantly changing and evolving, which can lead to some weird bugs getting through. This particular player saw something of an identity crisis play out in front of them as the game couldn’t tell the difference between the player and their opponent.
On the mainFinal Fantasy 14subreddit, Reddit user Ekanselttar shared an image compiling multiple shots of their battle log, where their character was mistaken for the person they were fighting. The player character, named Wicked Thunder, was facing off against the NPC Wicked Thunder in theAAC Light-heavyweight M4fight. While two separate entities, the screenshots show the game getting confused, stating that the player hit themselves with the boss' attacks for tens of thousands of points of damage. The entire battle log plays out comedically, with the player allegedly injuring themselves multiple times, or prepping attacks to use on the rest of the group.
Final Fantasy 14 Naming Bug Goes Way Back
While this bug report dates back tojust before the 7.1Final Fantasy 14update landed, it’s likely that it hasn’t been addressed yet. Nothing in the patch notes specifically mentions it, and the bug has actually existed in several forms over the course of the game. A similar issue used to confuse the game’s battle system when two players would join a fight with the same name. These days, world names are now used to differentiate between players with identical names that have joined cross-server instances, so the bug isn’t seen in this form.
However, that’s not the only known case. Another player pointed out that someone went through something similar back in Endwalker. During a certain sequence of events in the game, players can take control of allies, rather than fighting as their own character. The game will alert the player to this swap by informing them that “In the coming battle, you will play as [character].” However, a player playing with the name “G’raha Tia” was amused to find that when they were swapped to the actual NPCG’raha Tia, the game told them that “You will play as you.”
Needless to say, there seem to be some odd hiccups in the way the game identifies characters, both players and NPCs, based on their names. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like this bug has any major negative impact on gameplay, but players who share names with NPC might want to keep an eye out for any weird quirks of their own.
