The long-awaited arrival of the Kicks cosmetics inFortnitehas got off to a rocky start, as some players believe the price is far too high.Fortniteis no stranger to unique cosmetic items, but the Kicks are a bold new pivot, bringing real-life sneaker fandom into the game. From recreations of Nikes to original designs,Fortnite’s Kicks provide players with even more ways to customize one’s playable character.
Unfortunately,the price of these Kickshas gotten in the way of an exciting release. Launched on November 21, Kicks aim to bring even more options to players who want to make their characters as expressive as possible, but with a few of these cosmetics costing nearly as much as low level character skins, some players are asking for a price cut. This hasn’t been the only price controversy to plagueFortniterecently, as the new Battle Pass for Chapter 6 is 50 V-Bucks more expensive than it has been in the past.
Fortnite’s Kick Controversy Mainly Revolves Around Its Price, But There is Also More to the Story
Claims of High Prices and Complaints About Skin Compatibility
The first round of released Kicks inFortnitevary, but they range from 600 to 1,000 V-Bucks, at least for now. There is plenty ofnew content inFortniteafter its Chapter 6 launch, but Kicks have been one of the most anticipated additions leading up to the new Chapter. While the cheaper versions of these cosmetics seem to be original shoes based onFortnite, like the Meow-Soles cat slippers, the more high-profile crossovers, like Air Jordan, are noticeably more expensive at the 1,000 V-Bucks price tag.
One of the biggest complaints regarding this pricing is that some players are irked about the fact that a character’s shoes aren’t even that visible when playing the game. Reddit user EveryandEggy states, “You can barely see feet in the game.” This makes the steep price tag so disappointing for many players, as the cosmetics aren’t even on clear display. At least with Back Bling, Pickaxes,and unique Gliders, one can clearly see what they have purchased, but Kicks are another story. Many have been asking for the cost to be cut in half, but this isn’t even the only issue players have with Kicks.
Kicks do not provide players with any competitive advantage.
Not All Character Skins Are Created Equal With Kicks
For now, not every skin is able to wear Kicks, causing even more frustration withintheFortnitecommunity. Although not every skin can have the benefit of wearing Kicks, Epic Games has stated on its official website that developers are “working to make additional existing Outfits compatible on a rolling basis.” However, there is no confirmation or insight as to how often these roll-outs will be. Unfortunately, this means it could potentially be a while for a player’s favorite skin to get proper Kicks support.
Kicks Are Not Supported in These Fortnite Modes
Before players purchase a pair of Kicks inFortnite, there is a “Kicks Usability” button that can be selected. This button showcases which skins in one’s locker are able to use Kicks.
Despite the issues surrounding the pricing choices ofFortnite’s Kicks, they thankfully don’t provide players with any sort of advantage in matches, making them unnecessary for experiencing the game fully. For a cosmetic that isn’t completely visible, the criticism of this pricing is warranted, but it also doesn’t hinder gameplay, which is an upside. Now thatFortnite’s Chapter 6 is officially under way, it will be interesting to see if Kicks struggle to find the same draw as other cosmetics featured in the game.
