Dreamworks will soon follow Disney’s lead by releasing a live-action remake of one of its animated classics,How to Train Your Dragon.The remake recently received its first official trailer and poster, and it all looks very faithful to the original film so far.
How to Train Your Dragonwas first adapted byDreamworksin 2010 from Cressida Cowell’s novel. The story takes place in the mythical Viking village of Berk which contains a community of dragon-slayers. The chief’s young son, Hiccup, dreams of being a mighty dragon-slayer like his father, but when he comes across a rare Night Fury, he ends up befriending it, and this revolutionary friendship begins to change the dynamic between humans and dragons. Themovie was a massive success for Dreamworks, earning almost half a billion at the box office, and spawning a franchise with a trilogy of films and multiple TV spin-offs.
Teaser For Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Released
In 2023, Universal Pictures announced it was developinga live-action remake ofHow to Train Your Dragon, with the film’s original writer and director, Dean DeBlois, returning to direct. Filming began in January 2024 and wrapped in May, and now fans have their first glimpse of how the iconic Dreamworks film translates into live-action.
The teaser released byUniversal Pictures' YouTubechannel shows Mason Thames as Hiccup confessing to his father, Chief Stoick (played by Gerard Butler who reprises the role he originated in the animated film) that he can’t kill dragons. The rest of the teaser is taken up with footage of Hiccup and Toothless’ first meeting, which is a shot-by-shot copy of their meeting in the animated movie. Rather than going for photo-realism like Disney’s live-actionLion Kingremake,How to Train Your Dragonleans into thestylized depiction of Toothlessand the other dragons, making them almost identical to their animated counterparts. The teaser ends on the title treatment forHow to Train Your Dragonwhich is overlaid by John Powell’s score, another returning creative from the original film.
In addition to the teaser, Universal Pictures released the first IMAX poster forHow to Train Your Dragon. The poster shows the silhouette of Hiccup petting Toothless on top of a cliff, which is imagery that has become synonymous with one of the film’s most iconic moments, as shown in the teaser. Toothless can also be seen in the poster with his artificial tail, which Hiccup builds for him later in the movie so that the dragon can fly once again. The poster bears the subtitle “The Legend is Real.”
Along with Thames and Butler, thecast ofHow to Train Your Dragonincludes Nico Parker as Astrid, Nick Frost as Gobber, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut, and Harry Trevaldyn as Tuffnut. While the live-action remake appears to be a faithful recreation of the original movie thus far, what many fans are interested to know is what will be changed or added in the newHow to Train Your Dragonfilm. With DeBlois returning to helm the live-action film, fans can rest assured it will be faithful to the source, but this remake also provides the opportunity to do some things differently from the animated version.
