The ’90s was a special and unique time forhorror, and one popular story is getting a new take.Varietyreported thatSony is making a remake ofIdle Hands.Jason Reitman is producing the movie, and Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard are writing it.
According toVariety, Reitman said:
“Finn and Billy crushed their directorial debut and have a completely original take on ‘Idle Hands’ that captures a disaffected generation. We are excited to support them as they bring their unique take to the screen and summon the demons.”
In even bigger news thatStranger Thingsand horror fans alike will want to hear, it’s possible that Bryk and Wolfhard will direct theIdle Handsremake. The pair are coming off the success of their horror movieHell of a Summer, which will be released by NEON in 2025. The cast ofthe modern slasher movieincludes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Abby Quinn, and Fred Hechinger. The movie is about counselors at a place called Camp Pineway who are targeted by a serial killer.
Wolfhard is an impressive young voice and talent in Hollywood. Besides showing histalent for vulnerable characters such as Mike Wheeler onStranger Things,Wolfhard amazed the Duffer Brothers by guessing their spin-off ideathat they haven’t shared publicly. It’s exciting to see him delve deeper into the horror genre with a remake ofIdle Hands. Since this is his second horror film, he appears to be drawn to this particular genre. It’s also great that Reitman is producing. The filmmaker directed hit movies such asUp In The Air,Young Adult, andUp In The Air.He also directedthe 2021 movieGhostbusters: Afterlife, which stars Wolfhard.
The original movie comes from the statement “idle hands are the Devil’s play-things” and was released in 1999.Devon Sawa, who also appeared in the firstFinal Destinationmoviealong withtheChuckyTV series, playedthe main character, Anton, whose hand becomes possessed. It’s unclear just how closely theIdle Handsremake will follow the original movie. If it was to close, that would be boring, so hopefully some changes will be made. However, it’s a great idea to bring this story into the current time as the movie has important coming-of-age, family, and friendship themes that are still relevant. WhileIdle Handsfeels very ’90s since it has a cheesy tone, Wolfhard and Bryk will no doubt make it feel like the 2020s. It will be fun to see what they do with this compelling and memorable story, and fans of the horror genre andStranger Thingsare no doubt intrigued.
