Summary

A recent tweet from Elon Musk may allude to the controversial billionaire potentially acquiring entertainment powerhouseHasbro. This tease comes just days after Musk announced his intentions to build an AI game studio, and if successful, aHasbropurchase would grant him ownership of iconic franchises likeDungeons and Dragons,Transformers, andMagic: The Gathering.

Although Elon Musk holds high-ranking roles across Twitter, SpaceX, Tesla, and very soon, the US government, the billionaire’s penchant for video games is well-documented. Earlier this month, it was revealed thatMusk is one of the top-rankedDiablo 4players worldwide, charting at an impressive 19th place. Musk also takes to Twitter occasionally to comment on new developments in the games industry. Some of Musk’s opinions stir up controversy as well, like his “DEI kills art” remark about Ubisoft’s upcomingAssassin’s Creed Shadows.

Musk has recently been more vocal on Twitter about his criticisms of the games industry, even expressing interest instarting an AI game studioto “make games great again.” It seems the billionaire might have been more serious about this venture than some may have expected, asMusk hinted at purchasing Hasbroin a recent tweet. The specific mention of Hasbro isn’t out of the blue either, as Musk has been engaging in discourse aboutDungeons and Dragonsover the past week. On November 22, Musk criticizedDungeons and DragonsProduct Lead Jason Tondro’s remarks in the “Making of D&D” 40th Anniversary book.

Elon Musk’s Potential Hasbro Purchase Could Be Fueled by His Passion for Dungeons and Dragons

In the book’s foreword, Tondro distanced himself fromDungeons and Dragons' original creators, including E. Gary Gygax, prompting a heated response from Musk. The billionaire condemned Tondro’s comments, stating that nobody “gets to trash” Gygax and that Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast shouldn’t stand for it. One week later, anotherTwitter user posted Tondro’s reactionto the outrage, to which Musk responded, “How much is Hasbro?” While this offhand remark is far from a formal statement of intent, Musk’s apparent passion forDungeons and Dragonsdoesn’t rule out a potential Hasbro acquisition either.

It’s also worth noting thatMusk asked a similar question about Twitter’s valueback in 2017, and seven years later, the platform is under his ownership. It remains to be seen what comes of Musk’s potential plans for buying Hasbro, but if he does go through with it, the billionaire will gain control ofDungeons & Dragons, as well as other high-profile IPs likeTransformers,Monopoly,Magic: The Gathering,Axis and Allies, andMy Little Pony. The timing aligns with Musk’s AI game studio objectives as well, but whatever does come out of it will likely not featurecrime on a comparable level toGrand Theft Auto 5.

Created by Gary Gygax, Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop game in which players craft their own worlds and band together to take on adventures through mysterious realms outlined in companion materials.
