Summary
Elden Ring’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki has recently teased the future of the FromSoftware IP, suggesting possible spin-offs are in the works instead of a direct sequel to the acclaimed dark fantasy. The Japanese developer has produced several, iconic Soulslike games during its longevity, in addition toElden Ring, including theDark Soulsfranchise,Bloodborne, andSekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Miyazaki has confirmed more projects are currently being worked on.
The punishing expanse ofElden Ring’s Lands Between debuted in 2022, rife with unaided exploration and hardcore boss battles, and the game went on to win Game of the Year.Elden Ringrecently rocked the gaming industryonce again when theShadow of the ErdtreeDLC received a nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. A new rule granted DLCs and expansions admission, and consideringShadow of the Erdtreewas nearly the size of a AAA game, many are backing the decision to include it as a nominee.
In an interview with Game Watch(via Dexerto), Miyazaki was asked about the future of theElden RingIP, as the fandom is wondering what will succeedShadow of the Erdtree. Miyazaki immediately crushed hope of a direct sequel, confirming, “At this point, we are not considering developments such as Elden Ring 2.” Thankfully, the director teasedElden Ringcould return through other projects, saying, “However, this does not mean that we are denying the development of the IP.”Shadow of the Erdtreecould have been a sequelto the base game as it was a large-scale production, but it seems FromSoftware is hard at work on several projects instead of a direct successor.
Elden Ring Director Crushes Sequel Hopes but Doesn’t Deny IP Development
“FromSoftware is running multiple projects as usual. Among them, there are various variations of projects, so I hope you will look forward to them,” Miyazaki continued. Some of these teased projects could be related toElden Ring, but if a sequel is off the table, perhaps a prequel or spin-off titles are being planned to expand the game’s rich lore. There’s a chance that one of FromSoftware’s projects is a live-action adaptation ofElden Ring, since a movie is already rumored to be in the pipeline.Elden Ringfans believe a series would work betterthan a movie, and there’s also the possibility it could turn out to be an anime adaptation.
As expansive asElden Ring’s DLC was,Shadow of the Erdtreeseemingly left one feature for a successor to conquerregarding the mount Torrent’s evolution. If FromSoftware does end up making a spin-off, there is plenty to build upon on the shoulders ofElden Ring’s success, and room for new mechanics, characters, and locations to evolve the IP’s sprawling history.
