Summary
The premiere ofDexter: Original Sinis less than two weeks away, and excitement for the prequel series has reached fever pitch, especially after the release of the full trailer last week. Fans had been theorizing about what form Michael C. Hall’s narration would take in the series, andthe trailer confirms it’ll be Dexter re-telling his early years as his life flashes before his eyes, as he fights for his life.
Many fans had predicted this would be the case, and it certainly isn’t a disappointment, especially as the trailer also confirmedMichael C. Hall would at least be making a cameo, as well as providing the ‘inner voice of Dexter’. It builds excitement for the upcoming sequel series,Dexter: Resurrection, while also promoting the soon-to-be released 10 part prequel series.

When theDexter: Original Sintrailerdropped last week, it opened with the familiar shot ofDexter Morganbleeding out on the snow in Iron Lake in upstate New York, right where audiences last saw him at the end ofDexter: New Blood. The clip was accompanied by the originalDextertheme, and Michael C. Hall’s narration, as an ambulance raced to the scene to save his life:
It really is like they say. Your life flashes before your eyes.
It looks like Dexter will technically be dead as his life flashes before his eyes, and he revisits the early days of hisdark passenger, with Patrick GIbson’s iteration of young Dexter being introduced as he embarks on an internship in the forensics department at Miami Metro Homicide. Many fans were giving themselves a pat on the back after predicting this would be how Michael C. Hall’s voiceover would take shape inDexter: Original Sin. One fan known as PeQu commented on the accuracy of the theorieson X:
OMG THE THEORIES WERE RIGHT THE WHOLE SHOW IS ABOUT HIS LIFE FLASHING BEFORE HIS EYES AS HE’S BLEEDING OUT
The theories had been swirling around online for many months, especially after Michael C. Hall teased thatDexter was actually aliveafter the events ofNew Blood. Fans were convinced that the inner voice of Dexter had to be the serial killer with a code recapping his life while clinically dead.
Dexter’s Present Timeline Voiceover Is A Smart Way To Link Original Sin To Resurrection
Fans are excited aboutOriginal Sin’s crossover with Resurrection, as it firmly links the Dexter-verse moving forward. It’s also a clever marketing ploy to get fans interested in Dexter’s origin story, while also setting up the events inResurrection’s future timeline, with the sequel series set to begin filming in January 2025 for a release next summer. This flash forward technique being used inOriginal Sinis very reminiscent ofBetter Call Saul. TheBreaking Badspin off was primarily a prequel, but it teased future events, which would eventually become the main focus at the end of the series. In Dexter’s case, it’ll feature the future timeline in its own sequel series,Resurrection, but the set-up will happen inOriginal Sin.
It’s unclear ifOriginal Sinwill just be a one-season limited series and act solely as a set-up forResurrection,as surely present day Dexter Morgan will be resurrected, and will no longer be able to narrate the prequel series in the same form, as his life wouldn’t be flashing before his eyes anymore. It would be a shame if that was the case, as there is so much to dive into withDexter’s past.Original Sinis bound to be a ratings hit, so Paramount will likely want to explore more of Dexter’s 90s set stories.
