Warning: The following contains minor spoilers for Demon Slayer, now streaming onCrunchyroll.
For now,Demon Slayer’s Muzan Kibutsuji’s main goal is to achieve true immortality by becoming immune to the one thing that can kill him: sunlight. His two main options for achieving that goal are to eitherfind the elusive Blue Spider Lilyor absorb Nezuko, who has the natural ability to resist sunlight despite being a demon. The Demon Slayer Corps will stop at nothing to prevent him from doing so, but should they fail, what then?
As the cause for pretty much everything bad that’s happened in the world ofDemon Slayer, every action he takes can cause huge repercussions for everyone, so naturally, one of the biggest what-ifs in the series is about his victory. A cold and secretive man, Muzan rarely discloses what is truly in the deepest recesses of his heart and mind. Muzan has never mentioned what he plans to do after achieving immunity to sunlight because there’s never been a need to. However, based on his actions and behavior, there are a couple of possible outcomes.
Possibility #1: To Dominate Japan/the World
And Then Enslave Humanity
The most obvious outcome is that Muzan conquers the world with little effort now that he isn’t limited to fighting only at night. He’ll be practically unstoppable, as eventhe Demon Slayer Corps' Nichirin Weaponrywon’t work on him anymore since the only reason they worked on demons in the first place is because they’re infused with sunlight. After beating the Demon Slayers, he’ll unleash an army of demons to take over the world. He could give other demons sunlight immunity, making them unstoppable as well.Muzan can kill any demonsince their powers are all derived from him, so he doesn’t have to fear any insurrections from them.
He might stop at Japan, or maybe he won’t. The point is that he’ll make an unstoppable empire, and there’s literally nothing anyone can do about it.
Driving Humanity to the Brink of Extinction
Instead of enslaving humanity with an army of demons, Muzan could also just drive them to the brink of extinction. Why endure the occasional human rebellion, even if they can’t win, when you can simply annihilate them? He would have to keep some humans alive though, because he craves and needs human flesh to survive. Although, there is a chance that he somehow gainsNezuko’s ability to survivewithout eating human flesh, along with her immunity to sunlight.
Another way this could go about is that he kills all his demon underlings after wiping out most of humanity. He might want the world all for himself, not willing to share it even with his most loyal demons. In that case, the world will be left with only him and a handful of humans to satisfy his hunger, a world that’s only a husk of what it once was.
Possibility #2: Muzan Lives a Peaceful Life
À la Thanos
It might sound crazyfor a power-hungry maniacto suddenly “retire” and live a quiet life in private, but it’s not entirely impossible. Muzan’s desire for immortality stems from his hatred of change. He doesn’t want time, sickness, or anything else to alter him, and he wants things to stay the way they are, forever. One way to live a life without change is to basically go on an eternal vacation, no longer threatened by Demon Slayers, sunlight, the march of time, or literally anything else. The scenario is similar to how Thanos acted at the end ofMarvel’sAvengers: Infinity War. Though they don’t really have the same ideals, they might have similar retirement plans.
Have I ever told you a lot how much I detest change? Changes in circumstance, the changes of flesh, changes in one’s emotions. Most changes cause only weakness and inferiority…and I am not weak. What I’m interested in is permanence. To forever remain in perfect condition immune to the disease of change.
The only reason Muzan even created demons was to search for the Blue Spider Lily or wait forone of them to gain immunity to sunlight. Once he gains it, he might not have any reason to keep demons around anymore. He might even leave the Demon Slayer Corps alone since the only reason he hates them is that they’re killing the demons he made, and therefore slowing down his search for the Blue Spider Lily. Again, once he’s achieved true immortality, he wouldn’t really have a reason to hate the Demon Slayer Corps.
He might still take them down as revenge for being a thorn in his side for so long, but the rest of humanity might be spared. So Muzan disappearing from the public eye and leaving humanity alone might actually be a possible outcome. However, hiscraving for human fleshwould remain, so he’d still occasionally abduct humans to satisfy his hunger. But again, if he gains Nezuko’s ability to survive without human flesh, even that won’t be necessary.
It’s ironic to think that there’s a chance a peaceful world could be achieved simply by letting the Demon King win, but of course, that’s just a theory. The Demon Slayer Corpscan’t and won’t just let him win on the off chance that he leaves humanity alone. At the end of the day, Muzan Kibutsuji is someone who isn’t afraid to cheat, lie, and kill the innocent just to achieve his goals, and as long as he and the Corps exist at the same time, the world ofDemon Slayerwill not know peace.
