Summary
A surprisingly creepyPlayStation 2game about Piglet, one of the core characters ofWinnie the Pooh’s Hundred Acre Wood, has skyrocketed in price on eBay. After being largely forgotten, it seemsPiglet’s Big Gamehas a surprising level of creepiness for aPS2kids game that has drawn in players after all these years.
Piglet’s Big Gameis amovie tie-in gamethat came out back in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, GBA, and PC, albeit with some large differences between the different platforms. As is often the case with plots surrounding Piglet, the diminutive creature has to try and battle his own anxiety as he tries to help his friends. In this game’s case, this includes delving into friends' dreams in order to rid them of the problems they’re having.
Now, thecreepyPoohgamehas gone from largely being forgotten to having copies sell out on eBay. In October, copies of the game were rarely sold, and were often included as a toss-in on lot purchases of multiple games. The price typically never reached $20 USD, but as of this writing, the game’s price has shot up to selling for up to $300 USD, with numerous copies sold in the hundreds of dollars, and remaining copies asking for up to thousand.
Why is a Piglet PlayStation 2 Game So Valuable Suddenly?
Footage fromPiglet’s Big Gamestarted going viral earlier in November following social media users sharing brief glimpses of gameplay and the game’s soundtrack. While the entirety of the game apparently isn’t creepy, Piglet’s journey through Owl’s dream takes place in a spooky library that looks akin to theSpencer Mansionor anotherResident Evillocale. The anxiety-inducing gameplay benefits from impressive sound design, but the biggest leap for its popularity is likely due to an unusual connection toSilent Hill.
Social media users have pointed out that one of thePiglet Big Game’s tracks seems to sound very familiar to fans of theSilent Hillfranchise. One track in particular, Foreboding 1, sounds as though it’s using a sample thatSilent Hillseries composer Akira Yamaokaalso used while working on the series’OSTs. This, combined with the game’s surprisingly positive review scores at launch has led a lot of fans of scary games to want and check out the game that’s being referred to as “Baby’s First Survival Horror.”
While the hype is unlikely to last forever, at the moment, copies of the game on eBay remain expensive, whether players look at the PS2 or GameCube versions. As a game that’s largely been forgotten, copies of the title seem to be fairly limited. It remains to be seen if the price rises even further from here or if it begins to calm back down.
PlayStation 2
The PlayStation 2 was Sony’s direct “sequel” to their original PlayStation and stands as one of the best-selling and most beloved consoles of all time. With a catalog of amazing games, it stood strong against the GameCube and Xbox in the sixth-generation of the console wars.
