Summary
While James Gunn has made it clear that his new projects releasing at the end of this year and next are the beginning of the slate being wiped clean and rebooting theDCU,Creature Commandosdemonstrated very early on that the slate hasn’t been wiped as clean as previously thought. In fact, it appears there are at least a few projects that took place before the official start of the new DCU aired that are officially part of its canon.
The previous iteration of the DC Comics adaptations, theDCEU got a welcome rebootby most fans because the quality of the projects was quite varied. For every Man of Steel, there were threeBlack Adams orWonder Woman 1984s. How those movies were tied together was also a bit confusing as some featured cameos from other characters from other projects while some never even mentioned the existence of well-known heroes or villains. The DCU was meant to get rid of all that confusion, but it appears that James Gunn has a special place in his heart for some of those properties. TheCreature Commandoswriter and creator (as well as DCU chief) specifically made two of his own properties part of the DCU after the fact.
DCEU Pulled Into The DCU In Creature Commandos
The first two episodes ofCreature Commandosreleased on Thursdayand the HBO Max series wasted no time in making it very clear thatThe Suicide Squadis part of DCU canon. Several scenes in the first two episodes have Frank Grillo’s Rick Flagg Sr. talk about the death of his son, Rick Flagg Jr. That character, played by Joel Kinnaman was shot and seemingly killed by Peacemaker inThe Suicide Squadmovie. Of course, it’s long been thought that the film would have to be canon asGrillo has already talkedabout being out for revenge when his character appears inPeacemakerSeason 2, but it’s now officially canon.
The Rick Flagg - Peacemaker tie isn’t theonly reason thatThe Suicide Squadwas made canon, either. One of the members of theCreature Commandoscrew is Weasel and as the group are being flown out to their first mission, Grillo’s Flagg tells his brothers in arms that Weasel is along for the ride because he’s shown the ability to be quite durable.

The comments areclearly aimed atThe Suicide Squadmaking it look like Weasel drowned after first airdropping onto the coast of Corto Maltese. Near the very end of that movie, it’s revealed he managed to survive after all.
MakingThe Suicide Squadcanon doesn’t have any direct effect on the DCU at the moment but it will help explain how and why Rick Flagg Sr. has a bone to pick with Peacemaker when he appears in that show. It should also make fans wonder if there still might be a chance that some of their other favorite DCEU characters, stars, and storylines get pulled into James Gunn’s new DC cinematic universe. It’s possible more reveals like that will even be divulged inCreature Commandos.
